Chennai Super Kings are all set to pit their wits in IPL 2022. We expect them to reach the latter stages of the tournament with their formidable squad led by one of India’s most decorated cricketers Mahindra Singh Dhoni.

They will make appearances for the 12th time in IPL this season, since their establishment in 2008. However, they were suspended between 2013 and 2015 for their involvement in betting.

CSK is the fourth richest franchise in IPL, owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd and India Cements, who are the major stakeholder of the team. The team is the second most successful team after Mumbai Indians, having won the IPL four times (in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021). They also have the highest win percentage of the games compared to other teams in the IPL (59.83%).

CSK also holds the record for most appearances in playoffs (eleven) and the Final (nine) of the IPL. On top of that, they have won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2010 and 2014. Their brand value in 2019 was estimated to be around ₹732 (roughly $104 million), designating them one of the richest clubs in IPL.

What happened in the 2022 auction of Chennai Super Kings?

During the 2022 auction, CSK’s legendary player Suresh Raina went unsold on both days of the IPL auction, setting his base price of INR 2 crore. This triggered controversy in the IPL as he was one of the prominent players of CSK.

However, Chennai Super Kings’ CEO Kasi Vishwanathan later revealed why the franchise didn’t buy the player during the IPL 2022 auction.

He said, “Raina has been one of the most consistent performers for CSK for the last 12 years. So, of course, it was very difficult for us no to have Raina, but at the same time you should also understand that the team composition depends on the form and kind of team which any team would like to have so that’s one of the reasons why we thought he may not fit into this team.”

CSK’s bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji also insisted, “Yes, like Kasi Sir said, it is time for a transforming phase, and I am sure a couple of youngsters will fill in the shoes which will get opportunities and will definitely become the next superstar from this set-up. So yeah, I wish everyone good luck and all the best for the season.”

During the auction, CSK bought new faces to fill Suresh Raina’s shoes and many other players who weren’t picked up by the team. During the auction, CSK had 49 crores available in their budget out of 90 crores.

And they spend 42 crores in the auction to retain their four most key players. CSK 4 players in their squad. The franchise retained Ravindra Jadeja for Rs. 16 crores, MS Dhoni for Rs. 12 crores, Moeen Ali for Rs. 8 crores, and Ruturaj Gaikwad for Rs. 6 crores.

And bought some big names like Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, Deepak Chahar, Shivam Dube, and Chris Jordan.

CSK strongest XI for IPL 2022

Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (C), Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, Adam Milne, and Dwayne Bravo.

CSK are all set to retain their IPL trophy this season, having done well during the auction, and we think they lack experience if few of their departments and don’t have the solid pedigree for this season, and they are the fifth favourites of this season will find it hard to defend the title. But they have one of the best batsmen, Mahindra Singh Dhoni has inspired CSK to victories in crunch moments.

CSK have the experience, but this time underdogs can cause an upset to the big ones, and CSK could be one of them. However, we think they will reach the play-offs but do not see them defending the title.
