The Proteas are set to take on India in the second match of the three-match ODI series on Thursday, at Boland Park. After taking the Test match series by storm and gaining huge momentum, hosts South Africa are now leading the ODI series 1-0 following their stunning victory in the first match.

In the opening ODI, where India were outplayed for the vast majority of the game, Rahul was at best mediocre in terms of his ability to think on his feet, something that's vital to captaincy. Failing with the bat, too, Rahul was ineffective in India's 31-run defeat. Middle-order problems, which have plagued the team since Virat Kohli's glory days as captain, are still an issue and some questions need to be asked.

Temba Bavuma and Rassie Van der Dussen's twin tons helped the Proteas to a well-deserved victory. There was a marked difference between the two sides in terms of spinners. Ashwin and Chahal, bowling 20 overs combined conceded 106 runs for a single wicket. Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Keshav Maharaj all bowled 26 overs for 124 runs and took four wickets.

Can KL Rahul step up and lead India to a change of fortunes? Or will the Proteas ride their momentum claiming another victory and the series?

Team News

Pacer Kagiso Rabada has been released from the squad, though the South African management will not be looking to make any changes to the winning squad. With skipper Temba Bavuma leading the team and Quinton de Kock to don the gloves, the hosts would be confident they have the team to win the series

Some serious questions need to be asked in the Indian camps with yet another middle-order failure. Venkatesh Iyer who was handed his debut with an all-rounder’s role was not used to bowl at all. So it stands to argue that, Suryakumar Yadav would be an established batsman would make more sense in the team.

Probable Playing XI

South Africa (SA): Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock (wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi

India (IND): Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Venkatesh Iyer, R Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal

Must-Picks

South African batsman Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Russen hit twin tons in setting a tall target for India. Much more of the same will be expected from the batsman in form.

Shikhar Dhawan played another consistent brilliant innings discomposing many of the critics questioning his place in the team. Virat Kohli has continued scoring runs in usual fashion chasing his elusive 71st century. The Indian skipper after a failure in the 1st ODI is also expected to come out all guns blazing.

Prediction

The hosts have a clear advantage in the series outplaying the Indians strategically and on the field performances. KL Rahul surely has to raise his game and inspire the team to perform better if India is to have a fighting chance in this match.

Cricwizz predicts the Proteas to ride their momentum and lay claim to the series win a 2-0 victory.
