Royal Challengers Bangalore
Indian Primer League’s (IPL) one of the most glamorous franchise Royal Challengers has been used by the owner for brand promotion. The owner decided to promote the Royal Challenge whisky during the cash-rich league. Since the Bangalore franchise was owned by liquor baron Vijay Malia he decided to use his one of the best liquor product Royal Challenge whisky as the franchise name of Bangalore. Kolkata Knight Riders
The two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders was named after a popular American TV series ‘Knight Riders’. The meaning of the franchise is all players are king’s men and they are in the battle field. They use a golden colour Viking helmet on their head to keep them safe from enemies. The franchise tries to connect with Kolkata’s history loving fans and give them a nostalgia.
The Hyderabad based franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad was founded in 2012 when Kalanithi Maran’s Sun TV Network bought the franchise from the Indian cricket board after Deccan Chronicle failed to run them. The franchise uses Sunrisers as a prefix. It was another business move from Maran’s company Sun TV who used Sunrisers for brand promotion of their television network. Like Deccan Chargers they did the same. Deccan was the brand name of Deccan Chronicle media network
Chennai Super Kings
IPL’s one of the most successful franchises Chennai was named as Super Kings because they wanted to honour Tamil Nadu empire and super is a common word in the south India, especially in Tamil Nadu so the franchise used ‘super’ in the middle. On the hand, the name ‘king’ was also derived from CSK owner India Cement’s brand ‘Coromandel King.
The inaugural IPL champions Rajasthan Royals were named as ‘Royals’ to honour the ‘royals’ of the state. It was a business move to connect with the local fans.
Reliance industries owned Mumbai Indians are one of the successful franchise in IPL. They used ‘Indians’ as the suffix to connect with the fans from across the nation.
A way to connect with the Indian fan base.
The Delhi Daredevils franchise used ‘Daredevils’ to connect with the local flavour. Delhiites are very aggressive and competitive so to connect with the local people the team was named as Delhi Daredevils.
Kings XI Punjab
The Mohali based franchise Kings XI Punjab have a valid reason to use ‘Kings’ as their franchise name. Their main objective to connect with ‘She-e-Punjab, which literally means Lions of Punjab. The people of the Indian frontier state want to see themselves as brave, loyal and with a huge hearts and qualities best epitomized by a lion.
