The spread of COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the sports events around the world. Several popular events have been suspended or postponed due to coronavirus threats, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which is postponed until next year. The cricket world is also affected by this deadly virus as many cricket matches have been called-off.
Now, according to some reports, the ICC World Test Championship Final is under the threat of this pandemic. The final of ICC WTC was scheduled to be played in June 2021 at Lord’s, but due to the current situation around the world, many fixtures of the event are suspended and it will be hard to schedule the matches as per the previous schedule.
This puts a threat to ICC to schedule the final as per schedule. The ICC World Test Championship 2019-21 is the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship of Test cricket.
It started from August 1 last year with the first Ashes Test. It is intended to be the premier championship for Test cricket. It is in line with the ICC’s goal of having one pinnacle tournament for each of the three formats of international cricket. Regarding the current situation, it might be difficult to host the final as per the schedule.
Currently, India is leading the WTC points table with 360 points. Australia is just behind India with 296 points while New Zealand is in the third position, with 180 points.
However, tournaments like ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and IPL are also under the threat of coronavirus. With a growing number of cases raised in Australia the ICC Men’s T20 WC which was scheduled to be in October later this year, also has fewer chances to happen. The 13th season of the Indian Premier League also has very few chances to be scheduled this year.
