With the popularity of IPL around the world, every national and international player has a dream to perform on the biggest stage. However, not all players have the capability to perform in IPL and sustain in every season.

5. (A) Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa, the right-handed top-order batsman from Karnataka has played 177 matches for 4 different IPL franchises so far. He made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2008 where he was bought for INR 3.2 Cr and had a decent season, scoring 320 runs in 14 matches with an average of 35.5.
For the 2011 season, he was bought by the Pune Warriors for a huge amount of INR 9.6 Cr and became the second most expensive player in that season after Gautam Gambhir.
Though his team didn’t perform well in the 2011 and 2012 season, Uthappa managed to score 405 and 434 runs respectively. For the seventh season of IPL, he was bought by KKR for INR 5 cr and played a huge role to win the trophy for KKR.
Uthappa was promoted as an opener during the India-leg of that season and scored 660 runs in 16 matches with an average of 44 and won the orange cap, he made a T20 record for scoring 40+ scores in 8 consecutive matches.
He was released by KKR ahead of the 13th season of IPL. In the 13th season, Robin Uthappa will play for Rajasthan Royals and this would be his fifth franchise.
(B) Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli is the only player who has played for the only franchise in all seasons of the IPL. He has played the same number of matches as Robin Uthappa – 177. Kohli was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural season on the basis of a youth contract. In the year 2010, he was the third-highest run-getter for his team and scored 307 runs with an average of 27.90.
Ahead of the 2011 season, Kohli was the only player retained by the franchise and became the vice-captain of the franchise. Kohli was the second-highest run-scorer in that season, only behind his teammate Chris Gayle. He was appointed as the captain of the franchise in 2013. He was successful with the bat and scored 634 runs with an average of 45.28.
In the 2016 season of IPL, he led his team to the finals and scored 973 runs in 16 matches with an average of 81.08 and won the orange cap. He smashed four centuries in a single season. Kohli became the first player to cross the 4000 run mark and became the 2nd player to reach the 5000 run mark in March 2019.
4. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik has played 182 matches for six franchises in his IPL career. He was a talented wicket-keeper batsman from Tamil Nadu back in the years and made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils in 2008.
In the next season, he made 288 runs and had 17 dismissals as a wicket-keeper. He was bought by KXIP in 2011 for INR 4.1 Cr, Punjab’s 2nd expensive player at that time. In 2012, Karthik joined Mumbai Indians but he was back in the Delhi Squad in 2014 who bought him for INR 12.5 Cr.
In the year 2018, he was bought by KKR for INR 7.4 Cr. He led KKR team to playoffs in 2018 and played a vital role with the bat and scored 498 runs with an average of 49.80. Karthik holds the record for most catches by a wicket-keeper in IPL history.
3. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in IPL history with four trophies in his cabinet. He has played 188 matches in his IPL career for 2 franchises. He made his IPL debut for Deccan Chargers who bought him for INR 3.2 Cr and played three seasons for them.
He played a vital role in their maiden IPL title win in 2009. He was one of the most consistent Deccan Chargers batsmen in the first three seasons of the IPL. He won the award for the emerging player for playing Deccan Chargers.
However, since 2011, Rohit has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians squad and guided them to be one of the best T20 franchises around the world. Under his leadership, Mumbai won four trophies in 2013,2015,2017 and 2019.
2. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is one of the most popular and successful players in IPL. MS Dhoni played 190 matches in his IPL career for 2 franchises. MS Dhoni is the only player in this list who was appointed as the captain in the inaugural season.
He was bought by CSK for INR 6 cr in the inaugural season. Under his leadership, CSK reached the playoffs in every season they played and won the trophy thrice in the year 2010, 2011 and 2019. For the first eight seasons, he was the face of the franchise and helped CSK to be one of the best T20 franchisees around the world.
In 2018 IPL season, Chennai Super Kings returned to IPL and Dhoni was again selected to lead the franchise. Dhoni scored 455 runs in the tournament and led his side to their third IPL title. In the 2019 IPL, Dhoni again captained CSK, which emerged to be one of the strongest teams in the season. Dhoni was the leading run-scorer for the team and led his team to the finals.
1. Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina has played the most matches in the IPL history. He has represented in 193 matches in his IPL career for two franchises.
Raina is associated with CSK from the beginning and has played a vital role in the success of CSK. He played two seasons as the skipper of Gujarat Lions and reached playoffs in one of the seasons.
Raina has the record for scoring 400+ runs in 7 consecutive seasons, the first Indian and second overall player to hit 100 sixes in IPL. He also has the record for scoring most fifty-plus scores for CSK.
