With the growing concerns due the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is stopped to spectate sports around the world. Many sports events are suspended or postponed due to the coronavirus threat. In this critical situation, cricket fans are unable to watch cricket as there is no action happening around the world.
At a time when cricket has momentarily come to a hault, we take a look at some of the most memorable cricketing moments for Indian fans this year.
1. India’s first T20I series win against in NZ
India thrashed New Zealand in the T20I series in their own backyard and became the first team to whitewash their opponent in a five-match bilateral series in T20Is. The ‘Men in Blue’ claimed their first T20I series win in NZ after taking an unassailable lead in the first three T20Is and inflicted a series sweep by winning it 5-0.
It was a remarkable effort from Virat Kohli and his boys. It was a thrilling series as some of India’s future stars rose to the occasion to deliver the goods. KL Rahul looked in sublime touch and even was aided superbly by Shreyas Iyer in the middle-order. Despite two T20Is which went down the wire, the visitors held their nerve and came up trumps on each of the two occasion.
2. Indian Women’s team qualified in their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup Final
Indian Women’s cricket team qualified in their first ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. The ‘Women in Blue’ had previously played three Semi-Finals but failed to qualify for the finals on any of the occasion.
In the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the Indian women’s team qualified for the semi-finals but failed to reach the finals after going down against the Kiwis. In the next edition in 2010, they once again failed to qualify for the finals after losing out to Australia in the Semis.
It was a largely dominating display in the league stages by the girls as India marched to the Semis undefeated in their entire campaign. However, a washout in the Semi-Final against England benefited India as they got the advantage after finishing at the top of their group. They earned a ticket to the finale but were no match for the Aussies in the finals as they were battered convincingly in a one-sided contest.
3. Sachin Tendulkar returns after 5 Years
Former Indian cricketer and a legend of the game, Sachin Tendulkar returned on the cricket field after five long years. It was a nostalgic and a moment to cherish for the Indian fans as they got a sight to bat their most beloved cricketer yet again on a cricket field.
Cricket Australia organized a charity match to raise funds for people affected by the Australian bush fires called “Bushfire Cricket Bash” or “The Big Appeal”.
Sachin Tendulkar was the coach of one of the teams led by Ricky Ponting. However, Australian cricketer Ellyse Perry invited Sachin to face-off in an over during the innings break during the same match. Sachin Tendulkar accepted the challenge and came to bat after five years after he last batted in an All-Star Game back in 2015. It was indeed a delightful moment for the Indian fans to watch the legend yet again take guard against a bowler.
