Every cricket fans were waiting for the IPL 2020 to kickstart. But the coronavirus pandemic has played spoilsport, albeit momentarily. IPL 2020 has been postponed to a later date but it will start depending on the situation about the current world crisis at the moment.
So, how IPL 2020 could kickstart despite the prevailing condition in the world?
Start if conditions are favourable
If the virus is contained and necessary precautions are taken, IPL 2020 could kickstart but with a lot of limitations. Safety will be paramount, and hence, IPL 2020 would be most likely to be a truncated one.
Short and crisp
With the IPL starting date already postponed to a later date, it would make sense to have a truncated tournament. It would be wiser to have a short and crisp tournament.
It would also not be feasible to stretch the tournament beyond May as foreign players would have to give it a miss due to international commitments. Hence, it would be essential to change the format of the tournament to meet the May deadline.
Likely format of IPL 2020
Make it just only one leg tie, with each team getting equal chances to play at home and away. Or, make it a two-group format, with winners of each group playing the knockouts.
A change in format would be essential to complete the tournament on time.
Play it behind closed doors
Already, a few football matches have been played behind closed doors before the leagues have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. So, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have IPL 2020 in a locked-up stadium if conditions are favourable for sports.
Fans, anyways, can catch the match live on television. But the excitement of watching the match in the stadiums can never be matched.
Cancel the tournament
Nothing should be of more importance than the safety of the players, spectators and the general public. Not even one person should be at risk by holding the IPL 2020. Hence, even if there is a slight danger to the masses by holding the tournament, it would be a wise decision to cancel it altogether.
