Sunrisers Hyderabad have named David Warner as their captain for IPL 2020. Warner was the captain when SRH won the title in 2016. But Warner missed a season due to ball-tampering ban and Kane Williamson led the team subsequently. Williamson led SRH to IPL 2019 final where they lost to Chennai Super Kings.
Even when Warner returned in IPL 2020, Williamson continued to lead the team. But SRH have gone back to their old skipper and removed Williamson from the job.
Was it a smart move from SRH or a step back?
Warner brings ruthlessness and plays better as a captain
The 2016 success was a lot due to Warner’s show as a captain-cum-opening batsman. He led the team from the front and won matches single-handedly. The team rallied around him and played better under him.
Warner played the role of the leader to perfection. Although Williamson has not done a bad job, Warner’s Australian qualities such as ruthlessness & winning mentality may have favoured the Australian for the job in 2020.
Besides, Warner bats more responsibly and clearly when he leads the team. And when a team sees the leader giving so much, the other players raise their game as well to match the call of duty.
Hence, SRH would be looking at Warner to take the team to another IPL glory with his leadership qualities and the bat.
A step back
What has Williamson done wrong to face the axe?
Williamson’s sweet nature may have gone against him although he is as good a leader as anyone in the business currently.
SRH may want a ruthless leader in Warner, but they have missed out on a calm captain in Williamson.
Williamson as a captain would have helped Warner to focus solely on his batting and won matches for SRH. Besides, Williamson has proven skills as a captain. He also takes pride in leading from the front and has the experience to diffuse tough, volatile situations on the field.
Williamson struggled with injuries last season and could not captain the squad for the full duration of the season. Also, SRH would find it easy to drop Williamson than Warner to accommodate an extra overseas but utility player in the XI. Hence, Warner looks the safe bet as the captain at the moment.
