The former England batsman Owais Shah reckons Indian Premier League is the biggest tournament in the world. Also, if a player showcases his potential in the IPL, it goes a long way in his development as a white ball cricketer.
According to Shah, IPL’s popularity as a tournament can be understood from the fact that apart from India and the other subcontinent nations, it has also got a huge fan-base in the United States of America, where cricket is not a widely followed sport otherwise.
While Baseball is the most popular sport in USA, Basketball and soccer have a massive fan following as well. Cricket is also starting to get there now, with the help of the IPL.
And Shah insists because the tournament is so popular, if you perform there, you are straight into the limelight. You can fetch a bigger amount in the next editions of the tournament. It’s a huge platform.
“It’s probably the biggest tournament in the world, the most followed. If you look at countries like America, apparently that is the country where the IPL is followed the most outside of India.” Shah was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“It is just a great place to go and show off your skills and it can really impact your whole career. When you perform at the IPL, your value really goes up.” Shah added.
The England selectors have always given a lot of importance to the performances in the IPL. Jos Buttler was recalled to the England Test squad on the basis of his form in the tournament, although it’s a totally different format of the game.
The Englishman believes a lot of the other England cricketers have also benefited from their appearances in the IPL, including the captain Eoin Morgan himself.
Most of the top England cricketers will be seen in action in IPL 2020 again, which is starting next month.
