Indian top-order batsman KL Rahul, the star in India’s series leveling win against Australia in Rajkot, is likely to be rewarded for his great run of form in the limited-overs internationals.
It is believed that the opener might find a place in the Test squad for the New Zealand series which is expected to be announced on Sunday in Bengaluru.
Rahul, who has had a great last few months in the white-ball format, hasn’t put a foot wrong in grabbing every opportunity that has come his way.
In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, he scored ample amount of runs to make it nearly impossible for the team management to drop him from the playing XI upon former’s return.
Although KL hasn’t had the best of his time in Test cricket of late, he still reinstates enough confidence in his abilities to succeed as a batsman even in the longest format of the game.
After a poor 2018 in the red-ball game, Rahul was mid-way dropped on the Australia tour after a string of low scores. He was a part of the Test series against West Indies post the World Cup, but couldn’t do enough to help his cause for a selection in India’s home Test season in 2019.
After being out of the Test setup for nearly six months, Rahul has earned the vote of confidence from the selectors and might get an opportunity to turn his fortunes in the traditional format of the game.
It will be a perfect occasion for the right-handed batsman to break into the Test setup and earn a place for himself in the starting XI. While there a couple of youngsters in race for a selection in the Test squad including the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Shubmna Gill, Rahul might have the edge based upon his recent form at the international level.
India will travel for New Zealand for the two-Test series after featuring in a limited-overs leg at the start of the tour. Rahul is already a part of the T20I squad announced earlier, and won’t induce any surprise if gets a nod for a spot in both ODI and Test squads on Sunday.
