Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane might yet again be seen playing for India in the limited-overs format in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. As per a report in the Mumbai Mirror, the Mumbaikar is in contention for a possible comeback in the ODI squad, which is expected to be announced after the Australia series.
Rahane, who last played an ODI in February 2018 against South Africa, batted at No.4 in India’s 5-1 convincing series win over the Proteas. However, ever since that tour, Rahane has been sidelined despite India’s middle-order conundrum that has haunted the team for quite some time now.
The 31-year old, who comes along with a reputation of being an accumulator in the middle-order was seen as India’s probable No.4 until late 2018, but somehow he was left behind in the race that saw some new faces grab that spot.
As India faces New Zealand in the three-match ODI series on their upcoming tour, it is believed that Rahane’s name was discussed in the meeting while picking up the ODI squad for the series.
However, the Indian selectors deferred the announcement of the Indian Test and the ODI squad for the New Zealand tour, while the squad for the five-match T20I series was announced a couple of days ago.
If Rahane gets the nod from the selectors, it will be an opportunity from nowhere for the Test specialist to address the lack of experience in the Indian middle-order in the ODI format. He has the experience to back himself at that decisive position in the middle-order to play the anchor’s role.
Being a compact batsman in reference to his technique, Rahane is an aggressive player who loves to play his shots. He is a busy customer and possesses all the qualities that make him best suited for the No.4 spot in the Indian team.
India is currently involved in a three-match ODI affair against Australia and will travel New Zealand for a full-fledged tour including the five T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests to conclude an important tour for the Men in Blue.
