The former Australian captain Steve Waugh reckons the Indian cricket team doesn’t need to worry about their failures in the knockout rounds of the ICC tournaments in the last few years.
According to Waugh, given how consistent the Indian team has been in all formats of the game, a major trophy might be around the corner. The supporters just need to have a little bit of patience.
The Indian supporters have been really frustrated with the fact that despite walking into every ICC tournament as the favorites in the recent years, the men in blue have consistently failed to go all the way and win the trophy.
The last time India won an ICC tournament was under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in 2013 when they beat England in the final of the Champions Trophy.
Since that triumph, India have been beaten by Sri Lanka in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2014, by Australia in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2015, by West Indies the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2016, by Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy 2017 and by New Zealand in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2019.
According to Waugh who guided Australia to the ODI World Cup title in 1999, it can sometimes happen in a sport that you are playing well, but still not being able to win the trophy. During these periods, you must not lose patience because if you keep doing the right things, the trophies will come at some stage.
“Is it a mental block that India keep losing in the knock-outs? “It is not mental. It is just sport.” Waugh told the Press Trust of India (PTI).
“India fans, you need to stay patient. Only a matter of time before they win something big again.” Waugh added.
