BCCI has announced the Indian team for the Women’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in Australia next month. The squad of fifteen will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur as the most experienced player in the side. Smriti Madhana, the star opening batsman was selected as Kaur’s deputy for the mega-tournament next year.
There were no surprises except for the inclusion of young 16-year old Richa Ghosh, as most of the players pick themselves based upon their form in the shortest format.
Richa, who has made the last minute entry in the squad, has been a consistent performer for Bengal in the age group cricket. The youngster was even impressive in the recently concluded Women’s T20 Challanger trophy, playing for India B. She was the fourth highest run-scorer in the tournament and was straight away awarded for her brilliant form.
However, the notable absentee from the squad was seam bowler Mansi Joshi, along with spinner Anuja Patil, who have been with the Indian team for quite some time now.
The left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad managed to stroll her way into the T20I squad after a string of consistent performances in the white-ball format. Gayakwad missed the West Indies series but the leading wicket-taker with eight wickets in the Challenger Trophy, she managed to find a place in the T20I World Cup squad.
India Squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Veda Krishnamurthy, Richa Ghosh, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Deepti Sharma, Shikha Pandey, Pooja Vastrakar, Poonam Yadav, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Rajeshwari Gayakwad
With the likes of Kaur, Mandhana and Shefali Verma, this Indian team has all the bases covered to stay in the title hunt in the upcoming month in Australia. India crashed out of the Semi-Final in T20 World Cup in 2018, and would hope to better their performance this year.
Before the final showdown, India will feature in a T20I tri-series involving title favorites Australia and England on their down under. It will be a dress rehearsal before they eventually play the hosts in the opening encounter on February 21.
