The Australian wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey wants to emulate MS Dhoni’s style of batting in white-ball cricket.
Dhoni, for most parts of his career, batted at no. 5 or no. 6 for India and won a lot of games for the men in blue from difficult situations in ODI and T20I cricket.
Carey, who generally bats at the top of the order for his team Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, has been assigned a different role in the Australian limited-over set-up, as the Kangaroos already have quite a few players to bat in the top order.
David Warner and Aaron Finch are the first choice opening pair for Australia, while D’Arcy Short is the reserve opener in the Australian squad for the upcoming ODI series against India.
Carey will be playing as a finisher and he wants to adopt the same game-plan that Dhoni adopted playing for India over the years.
Dhoni isn’t a part of the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia, but Carey played against the former Indian captain in 2019 when Australia toured India for a 5-match ODI series.
According to Carey, he is a big fan of Dhoni’s way of taking the game deep and cutting down on the no. of high risk shots till the target seems to be in the hunting distance.
“I know I will probably bat from the middle to lower order so it’s trying to finish games off for Australia. When you look at the best in the world like Dhoni, you want to learn as much as you can from him.” Carey said while speaking to the press ahead of the start of the ODI series against India.
“I was lucky enough to play against him last year. Take the game deep and win games-I aspire to do that one day.” Carey added.
