India’s head coach Ravi Shastri has insisted that MS Dhoni’s performance in the 2020 IPL will determine, if he will be a part of the Indian squad for the 2020 T20 World Cup.
Dhoni has not played cricket at any level since the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup where he scored a half-century for India against New Zealand.
The former Indian captain has not talked too much to the press, except on one occasion a couple of months back where he told the reporters not to ask him anything about his future plans till January.
According to Shastri, if Dhoni doesn’t have a great IPL, he is the kind of personality who wouldn’t impose himself on the team.
When he realized he had enough in Test cricket, he announced his retirement and passed the baton to Wriddhiman Saha. He would bid adieu to white-ball cricket too, if he realizes he is not up for it anymore.
But, on the contrary, if he performs well in the IPL, he certainly brings himself in contention. He has got the experience of playing in Australia and he has also got the power game. If he has got form on his side as well, it will be really difficult to overlook him.
“At his age, probably the only format he’ll want to play is T20 cricket which means he’ll have to start playing again, get back into the groove. He’s going to play in the IPL and see how his body reacts.” Shastri was quoted as saying by CNN News 18.
“If he (Dhoni) feels when he comes back that something is not right, just like he quit Test cricket. He just came and said Wriddhiman Saha is ready, here take the gloves. He might do just that. But if he has a cracking IPL, then he puts himself in contention.” Shastri added.
