D’Arcy Short has found a spot in the Australian squad for the upcoming tour of India, where the Kangaroos will be playing three ODIs.
Short has been included in the squad as a replacement for Sean Abbott who sustained a side strain while featuring in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).
According to Australia’s chief selector Trevor Hohns, Short’s versatility as a player has got him into the squad as not only is he capable of batting at any slot in the order, he offers a decent bowling option as well, as he can bowl a bit of left-arm wrist spin.
Australia already has 4 fast bowlers in the squad along with a left-arm spinner (Ashton Agar) and a right arm wrist spinner (Adam Zampa). Short with his left-arm wrist spin will add another dimension to the Australian attack.
Short made his international debut for Australia in February, 2018 and has gone on to play 20 T20Is and 4 ODIs ever since.
While his performance with the bat in the ODIs hasn’t been encouraging so far as he is averaging only 27.67, he has done pretty decently in T20Is, scoring 592 runs in 20 games at an average of 32.89 and a strike rate of 120.82.
It will be interesting to see how effective Short will be while facing the Indian spinner in Indian conditions. The 29-year old struggled against the spinners big time when he featured in IPL 2018.
In the seven IPL games that Short played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2018, he averaged only 16.43 with the bat. He will have to be better than that as India will pose a serious challenge to him with their two world-class wrist spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
