Pakistan are known to be quite unpredictable. They can turn up as champions on one day or embarrassed themselves on other days. They cannot be expected to be consistent on the cricket field.
In fact, there have been numerous memes, videos and clips mocking Pakistan players, especially their funny antics due to fielding lapses on the cricket field.
Cricwizz takes a look at a few incidents when Pakistan have embarrassed themselves on the cricket field.
Most cricketers come in the way of a throw to avoid run-outs even though new rules say that it can lead to obstructing the field dismissal if done deliberately. Misbah-ul-Haq had a moment of lapse during the Delhi Test against India in 2007 when he jumped to avoid the throw at non-striker’s end and the ball hit the stumps while no part of his body or bat was grounded.
Can it get more bizarre or unlucky than this? Or, it was Pakistan cricketers’ way to embarrass themselves.
The burly Pakistani batsman has been involved in so many comical run-outs that it is difficult to keep the count. However, this one was one of the weird and bizarre run-outs of Inzamam-ul-Haq.
During the Faisalabad Test against England in 2005, Inzy played a full toss back to the bowler Steven Harminson who reacted immediately by throwing down the batsman’s stump. As Inzy took evasive action, his backfoot was found ungrounded when the ball hit the stumps. Inzy was controversially given run-out.
The dismissal was another of Inzamam’s embarrassing run-out.
Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik’s dropped catch
The video of this dropped catch has gone viral and the two have become a butt of all jokes. The incident during a match against West Indies. Chris Gayle skied a ball with Shoaib Malik and Saeed Ajmal nearing the ball to catch it.
Ajmal took the position and folded his arms to grab the ball. On the other hand, Malik was expecting Ajmal to take the catch. But at the last moment, Ajmal let it go, expecting Malik to go for the catch, while the ball fell in the middle of them.
The two started blaming each other for the dropped catch on the field itself.
The two missed a basic of a calling it ‘mine’ when two or more fielders turn up to take a catch. Later, Malik said Ajmal told him he was backing up for him in case Malik spills the catch.
India was up against arch-rivals Pakistan during the Benson and Hedges World Cup in 1992. Tempers were already running high. Indian keeper Kiran More was vociferously appealing against Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad. The Pakistan batsman was unable to take any more of More’s continuous chanting and excessive appealing and jumped three times to mimic the Indian keeper’s style of appealing.
The scene when Miandad jumped and More walked off has been etched in the fans’ memories forever. It later became an embarrassment of sorts for Miandad.
Inzy’s obstructing the field
Apart from run-outs, Inzamam-ul-Haq has been involved in a hilarious obstructing the field dismissal. The incident happened during the 1st ODI between India vs Pakistan in February 2006.
Inzy drove the ball to mid-off with Suresh Raina fielding it. Raina threw the ball at the striker’s end to the keeper, but Inzy was in the line of the stumps and ahead of the crease. Instead of taking evasive action and going back to his crease, Inzy blocked the ball and drove it back to the bowler.
Indian players appealed for obstructing the field, and umpire Simon Taufel ruled it in India’s favour.
