India currently playing three matches T20I series against the West Indies. Both the teams have won one match each, hence the series is levelled and the decider is set to be played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, tonight.
After the T20I series, the two sides are scheduled to play three matches ODI series starting from 15th December in Super Kings den, Chennai. However, there is a big question on the availability of India’s left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan who is still recovering from a knee injury, which ruled him out of the T20I series.
He was replaced by Sanju Samson in the T20I squad, while he is still part of the Indian ODI team. But BCCI is yet to announce whether Dhawan will be playing the ODI series or not.
“During Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy Dhawan had a deep cut on his knee when Delhi was playing against Maharashtra. Medical has suggested that the left-hand batsman needs few more days or week of rehab and rest and he won’t be participating in any event” a BCCI official said.
Now, if Dhawan is not fit yet, then who will replace him in the ODI squad? Will it be India’s test opener Mayank Agarwal or young sensational batsman, Shubman Gill. They have KL Rahul as an option too who had an overall good World Cup campaign.
If we go to the domestic circuit, then Prithvi Shaw’s name will pop up, the Mumbai batsman just made his return to the cricket after his ban was ended and had a pretty sensational return to cricket. He already has a test match under his belt when he made his debut against the West Indies team last year.
India might also decide to call up a middle-order batsman in Dhawan’s place. This is a question that will be answered soon as the ODI series is approaching towards us quickly.
