Mickey Arthur has been appointed as the new head coach of Sri Lanka men’s cricket team.
The 51-year old South African took over the coaching responsibility from Rumesh Ratnayake who served as the interim coach of Sri Lanka.
Right after the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka has faced a lot of hardships and a string of poor performances be it in a bilateral series or any ICC tournament.
Mickey Arthur had previously been a part of South Africa, Australia and Pakistan has a tough job on his shoulders. Pakistan, a team with glorifying past has had a tough phase since winning the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
Mickey Arthur’s tenure ended with the Pakistani squad after the team failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2019. His biggest achievements with Pakistan cricket team were a top spot in the T20 rankings and not to forget the 2017 Champions Trophy.
At his tenure as the Sri Lankan head coach(consultant), he will be united by Grant Flower, who was with him during they stint with Pakistan. Mickey Arthur succeeded during his term with South Africa along with the South African legend Graeme Smith.
The biggest highlights during his time with the Proteas were back to back triumphs against India and Pakistan at home and a series win in Australia. After that it was time to conquer trophies with Australia after ending his alliance with South Africa in 2010.
Now he has to work on the batting and bowling departments of the Sri Lankan squad as the squad lacks consistency. Things will not be a cakewalk but Mickey has shown how effectively things can be conducted. It’s a task not everyone would pass with flying colours and let’s see how he prospers.
