We have seen many a cricketer getting four to five times more than their base price at the auctions. With the Indian Premier League 2020 auction scheduled to be held in Kolkata on the 19th of December, we take a look at the five most expensive IPL players ever.
Please bear in mind that we are not talking about the players with most wages.
5. Gautam Gambhir (11.4 crores)
One of the most underrated Indian cricketers, Delhi Daredevils’ Gautam Gambhir was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for a massive sum of Rs. 11.4 crore in 2011.
The southpaw was also appointed as the captain of the Knight Riders. Under his captaincy, KKR won the IPL trophy twice.
In 2011, he scored 97 in the final against Sri Lanka and helped his side lift the ICC World Cup after 28 years.
The left-handed opener made a comeback to Delhi was named Delhi Daredevils’ captain in 2018, but he reliquished the position after a series of poor performances.
4. Jaydev Unadkat (11.5 crores)
The left-arm pacer from Saurashtra was the most expensive Indian player at the IPL 2018 auction.
He was bought for Rs. 11.5 Crore by Rajasthan Royals after his exceptional performance in the previous edition for the Rising Pune Supergiants.
Unadkat was recently released by the same franchise after a poor run in IPL 2018. The 28-year-old is renowned for his smart varieties and wicket-taking abilities.
In the IPL 2019 auction, he was roped in by the Royals again for a cost of Rs 8.40 crores.
3. Dinesh Karthik (12.5 crores)
In the world of cricket that runs after attention and glamour, Dinesh Karthik stands as a stoic exception.
The Tamil Nadu man was bought by the Delhi Daredevils at Rs. 12.5 crore. The right-handed cricketer has been in several IPL franchises.
Currently the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the wicket-keeper batsman has an abundance of talent, even though he has been criticized for underperforming perennially.
Karthik possesses brilliant timing and presence of mind, as was evident in his match-winning final-ball six that won India the Nidahas trophy.
2. Ben Stokes (14.5 crores)
Wherever you go, whichever newspaper you peruse through, Benjamin Stokes would have found a mention.
The English all-rounder was the most expensive player to have been sold at the IPL 2017 auction.
He was sold to the Rising Pune Supergiants at a huge amount of Rs. 14.5 crore. From the last two seasons of the IPL, Stokes has been on the radar of most of the franchises.
His all-around skills are extremely laudable, for without the New Zealand-born player, the 2019 World Cup would not have been England’s.
1.Yuvraj Singh (16 crores)
The stylish left-hand batsman is still the costliest player in the Indian Premier League. Yuvi was sold to surprise, surprise, Delhi Daredevils again, at a whopping sum of Rs. 16 Crore in 2015.
Prior to that, in 2014, he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at an enormous amount of Rs. 14 Crore.
Till date, it is the man from Punjab who holds the record of scoring the quickest half-century in T20I history.
With plenty of experience in the shortest format, the veteran Indian cricketer is extremely popular among fans as well as the franchises.
