As with every sport, cricket loves comparisons too. And when the exercise is carried out between the accomplishments of two of the best to have played the gentleman’s game, excitement is aplenty.
Yes, we are talking about the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and the heir to his throne, Virat Kohli. Here is a glance at five of Tendulkar’s records that the current Indian captain is likely to break.
5. Most Test runs in a calendar year by an Indian
While Sachin Tendulkar boasts of many a record in Test cricket, the longest format of the game has not been the kindest to Virat Kohli.
In fact, as compared to his insanely admirable ODI credentials, Kohli’s Test record is a pale shadow of the former, even though it is more than good enough.
When it comes to most runs in a calendar year in Tests, Pakistani icon Mohammad Yousuf’s record of 1788 runs seems unassailable.
But, the Indian record for the same is held by none other than the ‘Little Master’. He had tally of 1562 runs in the year 2010. It came under siege when Virat Kohli made 1322 in 2018, having played one match less (13).
However, it is a record that could be under Kohli’s belt, sooner than later, considering his stupendous Test form off late.
4. Most ODI centuries
When it comes to the ODI format, Virat Kohli is in a league of his own. The Indian captain breaks records for fun, and perhaps, not even the mighty Tendulkar might come in his way.
Sachin currently holds the world record for most ODI centuries. The maestro hit an incredible 49 tons, and the person in close proximity to the feat is surprise, surprise, Virat Kohli.
Kohli is currently on 43 ODI centuries, and with a lot of time ahead in his already illustrious career, even the worst case scenario will not prevent him from getting to 50 ODI tons.
This record of Sachin’s will be the first in this list that Kohli would end up surpassing.
3. Fewest innings to 10000 Test runs
When you take Test cricket as a whole, Sachin Tendulkar has hit the most runs, centuries and the likes.
Considering the magnitude of these records, it is a bit premature to conclude that Virat Kohli would surpass them.
However, if there is a Test record of Sachin’s that Kohli would beat, it is most likely the former’s record (that he shares with Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara) of having reached 10000 runs in the fewest innings (195).
Tendulkar reached the feat in 195 innings. Kohli, on the other hand, currently sits on 7066 Test runs from 139 innings. It is therefore worth betting that Virat would break this record too, if his form continues in a similar vein.
2. Most ODI runs
If there is anyone who is worthy of challenging Sachin’s credentials of being the best ODI batsman ever, it is Kohli.
The ever-so-passionate cricketer has toppled many Tendulkar records and soon, one of the biggest would be under Virat Kohli’s belt.
Sachin has the most ODI runs in cricket history. The Master Blaster amassed as many as 18426 runs from 463 matches.
Kohli, in comparison, though, has scored 11520 runs from just 239 matches, and looks all set to break the aforementioned record.
All he needs to do is to avert injury concerns, and this one would be his too.
1. Most international centuries
The best has been saved for the last. When we talk about records, the biggest one worthy of being discussed is most definitely that of having the most international centuries.
Sachin Tendulkar achieved symbolic perfection when his 51 Test tons and 49 ODI hundreds combined to create a ‘wait-for-it’, 100 international centuries. Yes, you heard it right; a century of centuries!
But Kohli is currently third in the list behind Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.
The Indian captain has 69 international tons, and with at least six to seven years ahead of him, he would definitely shatter the elusive record.
