Chennai Super Kings have set up a title clash with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019. They won Qualifier 2 against Delhi Capitals to face Mumbai Indians again in playoffs. Will CSK be able to defend their title? Will Mumbai Indians win their fourth title? Cricwizz takes a look at little-known facts on IPL finals.
Superstitious Mumbai Indians?
Mumbai Indians have won their three IPL titles every alternate and odd year. They won it first in 2013 followed by triumphs in 2015 and 2017. So, will they win it again in 2019?
Mumbai Indians lost all the three matches to Rising Pune Supergiant leading up to the 2017 IPL final. In the title round, Mumbai defeated RPS by just a run to win their third title.
Since the playoffs kickstarted from 2011, the title has been won 6 times out of 8 by teams occupying the second spot in the group stage. The first exception has been SRH who were champions in 2016 IPL despite taking the third spot in the group stage. The other instance has been 2017 IPL when MI won the title after topping the group stage.
Out of 10 IPL editions CSK have been part of, they have entered the finals a record 8 times. The only other team to have been part of more IPL finals is Mumbai Indians who will be playing their fifth title round in 2019 edition.
Out of 7 IPL finals CSK have been part of before the 2019 edition, they have won three and lost four. No other teams have lost more finals in IPL. RCB are second with three – 2009, 2011, 2016 – and are yet to win a title.
Dhoni, the unlucky?
MS Dhoni has been part of a record 9 IPL finals, including the 2019 edition. No other player has been part of so many IPL finals. He has been part of CSK in 8 IPL finals and one for RPS in 2017 IPL final.
MS Dhoni has ended up as losing finalists a record 5 times (4 for CSK, 1 for RPS), the most by any player. Virat Kohli is second with 3 as losing finalists, all for RCB.
Lucky Karn Sharma?
Karn Sharma is the only player to be part of three successive IPL winning teams and each time for a different franchise. Karn Sharma was part of SRH in 2016 title triumph. He played for MI in 2017 title win. He was part of CSK squad in 2018 title win.
Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh were part of two successive IPL winning teams in 2017 and 2018 for MI and CSK respectively. If CSK win 2019 IPL final, they will emulate Karn Sharma’s record.
DC rose like a phoenix
Deccan Chargers are the only team to win an IPL final after being in the last spot in the previous season. DC held the last spot in 2008 IPL before winning the title in 2009 IPL, beating RCB in the final.
