This is the final weekend of the IPL 2019 group fixtures. Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have already qualified for the play-offs. The fight is for the last spot in play-offs. Four teams – SRH, KKR, RR and KXIP – are in the fray for the last berth in play-offs. RCB have been already knocked out of the race for play-offs. Here’s the current scenario of the four teams.
SRH 12 points with a game to go against RCB
KKR 12 points with a game to go against Mumbai Indians
RR 11 points with a game to go against Delhi Capitals
KXIP 10 points with a game to go against CSK
Cricwizz takes a look at these four team’s chances to qualify for play-offs.
SRH are fourth currently, despite sharing 12 points with KKR, due to better net run-rate. They have the best net run-rate of +0.653 among all teams in the tournament. They have to win it big against RCB on Saturday as KKR are not far behind in net run-rate.
Kolkata Knight Riders
If KKR also win their last match against MI, then SRH and Kolkata will be tied on 14 points and net run-rate will come into play. And SRH’s healthy run-rate will prove decisive. But SRH will have to win the RCB clash first. If SRH win, and KKR lose, Hyderabad will qualify for play-offs.
KKR must win their last match against MI by a big margin to pip SRH on net run-rate if the Hyderabad team also win their last match against RCB. But if SRH lose against RCB, then just a win against MI will be enough for KKR to qualify.
RR have their task cut out. They have 11 pts and even a win against DC by a big margin will not be enough if either of SRH or KKR win their last match. Hence, they must first win the last match against DC and pray that both SRH and KKR lose their last matches. RR will then qualify on 13 pts, and KKR, SRH will be knocked out with 12 points each.
Kings XI Punjab
KXIP can just hope for a miracle to qualify. And they are themselves to blame for this position. They have to win their last match against CSK by a very large margin and hope both SRH, KKR lose by an even larger margin to get tied up on 12 points with SRH, and KKR and qualify on better net run-rate. But it’s again on a condition that RR also lose their last match against DC. With a net run-rate in negative, KXIP are almost but out of the tournament.
Verdict: SRH and KKR are front-runners to bag the last spot in play-offs. SRH have a slight advantage over KKR as the Hyderabad team has the best net run-rate of all teams presently. They are also facing a depleted team RCB in the last match.
KKR have a tough challenge at hand. If SRH win their last match, KKR then need to win it by a big margin in their last match against MI. If SRH lose, KKR will qualify with just a win over MI.
Our vote goes to SRH to qualify for the last spot in play-offs.
