Chris Gayle 99 runs inning went in vain as Royal Challengers Bangalore clinched their first victory in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League.
Bangalore won the toss and decided to bowl first. This decision of Virat Kohli was perfect as they restricted Kings XI Punjab for 173 runs in 20 overs. Chris Gayle scored brilliant 99 runs off 64 balls innings that helped the Punjab franchise in reaching a respectable total.
Nevertheless, these much runs weren’t enough in front of two chasing experts Kohli and AB de Villiers. The two players added 85 runs for the second wicket. This was a crucial partnership because RCB is quite dependent on these two.
RCB chased down the total comfortably and won their first match by 85 runs with 4 balls remaining. There were a lot of things that made this fixture an interesting one. Let’s check out three talking points from this encounter:
3) Gayle storm continues
Chris Gayle has been a consistent player from the starting of IPL. The Jamaican batsman already has a lot of records to his name in the Indian League. Also, whenever people start doubting about his performance. He gives them a fitting reply.
The West Indian batsman scored a half-century in the first game of the ongoing IPL. Gayle didn’t perform in a couple of games and was replaced by Sam Curran in the roster. However, since his comeback in the team. The Jamaican batsman showed that he can’t be replaced.
First, he scored a brilliant half-century against Mumbai Indians and then scored his third half-century last night. These two outstanding innings of Gayle has put him on the third spot in the most runs scored by a batsman list.
2) Chase masters back at work
Kohli and De Villiers are the backbones of RCB. Whenever these two perform for the Bangalore franchise. Everybody all around the world cherishes it and Bangalore wins the match most of the times.
Both players added 85 runs last night and took Bangalore close to the target. ABD stayed at the pitch till last and returned back with a victory. Kohli scored 67 runs off 53 balls while De Villiers scored 59 runs off 38 balls not out innings.
This was an important innings for both the players as it must have boosted their confidence. Also, Bangalore needs to win all their remaining fixtures to reach the playoffs. With these two players back in form, the confidence of the roster has increased. Now, they might succeed in accomplishing the impossible.
1) KXIP’s middle order issues continue
For the third consecutive time, the middle order of Punjab has failed to perform in the match. From the game against Hyderabad, the openers of KXIP have been performing for their side.
Even last night when Gayle needed support from the other side of the wicket. There was no one to stay with him. If he wouldn’t have played this phenomenal inning, then the target for RCB would have been a lot less than what Punjab was able to score.
In the last season, the same issue was there in the Punjab team and it seems to be continuing in this IPL as well. Because of this sole reason they were not able to reach the playoffs. They started the season on good not last year but the miserable performance from the middle order kept them outside of the top four.
They have to find a solution to this problem soon as half of IPL is still left. If Punjab fails to eradicate this issue, then once again we might not see them in the playoffs.
