IPL 2019 has not been just about big hitting, hat-tricks, cool chases or cracking tons. There have been a few big flops as well. These players have failed to live up to expectations. Franchises may have spent a bomb to get their services, but their performances have not reflected the pay package they have been accorded. Cricwizz takes a look at the big flops of IPL 2019 so far.
The Australian is coming off a year ban and has looked rusty and not his usual self. In contrast, his co-partner in the ball-tampering scandal, David Warner, has come out all guns blazing in the IPL, stitching a successful partnership with England’s Jonny Bairstow.
Smith has scores of 20, 28 and 38 in three innings so far. Although it’s not bad, it’s not up to expectations either.
Smith is known to tear apart a bowling attack and finish off games. He has been lacking in these aspects. He has also lost his wicket at critical phases of the game, throwing away the momentum gained. Rajasthan failed to win their first three games as middle-order, comprising Smith, failed to take responsibility to finish 0ff games.
But there are signs Smith is improving with each game and a big knock is around the corner.
He is a World Cup prospect for India, but he is not doing his chances any favour by putting up pathetic scores in the matches so far in IPL 2019. He was a big success as an opener for CSK last season. It helped him storm back into the national squad.
But this season, he is yet to fire with the bat. He has been a non-starter, failing to even get a start to later pound the bowling attack.
His non-performance is putting undue pressure on the CSK middle-order. He has scores of 25, 5, 1, 0 so far in the four matches in IPL 2019.
CSK have back-ups to replace Rayudu as an opener. South African skipper Faf du Plessis is cooling his heels in the dugout, while Murali Vijay is another strong contender to replace Rayudu.
Dhoni may back Rayudu for a few more games, but time is definitely running out for the former Mumbai Indians player.
He was the most expensive Indian player in IPL 2018 auction, bagging a record Rs 11.5 core. He was released by Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2019 due to his inconsistent show. But to everyone’s surprise, Royals re-bought him for Rs 8.40 crore and they must be rueing their decision.
Unadkat’s economy rate has gone for a toss in this season, while he has managed to bag just two wickets in three games so far. He conceded 44 runs for 0 wicket, 26 runs for 1 wicket, 54 runs for 1 wicket in the three matches so far.
His performance or the lack of it against CSK, which saw Dhoni smashing Unadkat’s last over for three straight sixes, was the turning point as men in yellow posted a match-winning total of 175 and romped home by 8 runs.
He was subsequently dropped for the next match. It’s unlikely he will be called soon in the XI. But Unadkat needs to raise his game a few notches to win back his place.
RCB bought West Indian Shimron Hetmyer with great hope that he will shore up their middle-order and take the fight into the opposition’s camp. RCB bought the West Indian after his exploits with the bat in the ODI series in India last year.
He was bought for a record sum of Rs 4.2 crore. However, till date, the West Indian has just disappointed, looking awestruck with the dynamics of IPL.
In four matches so far, he has all single-digit scores of 0, 5, 9, 1, aggregating 15 runs at an average of 3.75.
RCB may still give him a match or two to translate his promise into runs. But patience is running out and unless Hetmyer conjures up a magical performance, he will be benched for the rest of the season.
RCB again invested in flamboyance in Shivam Dube in addition to Shimron Hetmyer for IPL 2019 and are paying their price for their poor decision. Dube is known for his big hitting (five sixes in a row in a Ranji game) in domestic cricket, but has flattered to deceive so far for RCB.
He has scores of 2, 9*, 5 in three matches for RCB so far. He was subsequently dropped for the match against Rajasthan Royals.
He has not inspired much confidence in skipper Virat Kohli to continue with him in the upcoming matches in IPL. RCB are going through tough times and looks set for another miserable IPL season.
