The twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League is under way, and in the ninth encounter we will be witnessing Kings XI Punjab taking on the Mumbai Indians at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.
The Punjab side, led by Ravichandran Ashwin is one that has traditionally underperformed in the IPL with only a solitary runners-up medal to their credit. They possess a good blend of foreign and Indian talent, that arguably does not have a lot of chemistry, and this could adversely affect their chances. They won against Rajasthan Royals in very controversial circumstances and then went on to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders, and this first home game could be a sign of things to come.
On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians has the potential to lift the IPL trophy like they did in three previous seasons, and boasts of a squad with rich depth and variety in both the batting and bowling departments, thanks to a pool of enviable foreign talent. With experienced T20 specialists in their squad, the Rohit Sharma-led outfit has the firepower to go all the way.
Punjab are expected to field Chris Gayle, David Miller, Andrew Tye and Mujeeb Rahman as their overseas players in the playing eleven, along with their skipper Ravichandran Ashwin, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Mohammed Shami and Ankit Rajpoot.
Mumbai are expected to stick with the lineup that won them the game against RCB, and play Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, Mitchell McClenaghan and Lasith Malinga as their overseas players, along with their captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuvraj Singh, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Mayank Markande and Jasprit Bumrah.

Chris Gayle vs Jasprit Bumrah
Chris Gayle has been the West Indian team’s opener for many years now, and the southpaw is a ferocious hitter of the cricket ball and an enterprising cricketer with a vast array of attacking shots. His ability to attack from the word go, makes him a very crucial player and a tough competitor. Gayle has the best score of 175 in IPL history, while playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has more than 4000 runs in the IPL.
Jasprit Bumrah is arguably one of the best bowlers in the world circuit, and possesses a variety of bowling changes. With his fast incisive yorkers, effective bouncers and surprising slower ones, the lanky pacer is a potent force to reckon with. Bumrah effectively won MI the previous game against RCB, and it will be interesting to see if he would be able to replicate his performance against Gayle and Punjab.
Mohammed Shami vs Quinton de Kock
Mohammed Shami has been very effective with the ball and has demonstrated his innate ability to take wickets at regular intervals. He takes on the mantle of being the new-ball bowler for Kings XI, and has thus far not given a selection headache to his captain as far as his place in the team is concerned. Whether Shami gets to move the ball at the start of the innings, will be key in a pitch like Mohali, that has traditionally offered a bit of help to the seamers.
Quinton de Kock has been one of the mainstays in the South African cricket team. The Proteas wicketkeeper has more than 1000 runs in IPL matches. He was traded by the Royal Challengers Bangalore to the Mumbai Indians after a surprisingly underwhelming season last year. But, de Kock has been able to deliver good performances for the Men in Blue.
Taking into consideration the experience of the Mumbai Indians team, coupled with the presence of their T20 stalwarts, Team CricWizz predicts that the Mumbai Indians would win its match against the Kings XI Punjab. But Punjab could be the dark horses in this tournament, and they can most definitely not be written off.
