Australia thrashed India in the Second Test to register a 146 runs victory and level the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1–1. Resuming the day’s play at 112/5 and still needing 175 more runs to win, Indian batsmen Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant looked nervous. Australian bowlers, on the other hand, were confident and gave their all to wrap up the Indian innings quickly.
On the sixth over of the day’s play, Mitchell Starc got Vihari caught out at square leg. A thick inside edge went straight to Vihari’s thigh pad and off to Marcus Harris who grasped it easily. This reduced the Indians to 119/6, thus ending any hope of a magical victory.
Umesh Yadav joined Pant in the middle as both tried to resist the Australian victory. Peter Handscomb, however, had other plans when he caught a low stunner off Nathan Lyon’s delivery to dismiss the Indian wicket-keeper. A wicket that allowed the Baggy Greens to inch closer to victory.
Ishant Sharma was the next batsman in as India were reeling 137/7. But, a flurry of wickets decimated the Indians as they were bundled out for 140 with the tail showing no resistance whatsoever.
First, Starc caught Umesh on his own delivery and then Pat Cummins took the final two wickets in the very same over. This handed the Baggy Greens a 146 runs victory. With this victory, the third test at Melbourne Cricket Ground will be a thrilling affair which would decide who would gain an advantage over the other. Nathan Lyon was adjudged the Player of The Match after he picked up eight wickets on a pace-friendly wicket.
Australia played superbly in this Test and should now back themselves to further dominate in this series. For India, however, there are loads of problems. First and foremost, is to get the team combination right. Next, they need to make sure that they pick openers who score and give a solid start to the side. Third, they need their bowlers to quickly dismantle the opposition’s tail-enders which was the difference-maker for the Aussies in this game.
It is expected that the visitors will come back strongly and give the hosts a tough time. This series was expected to be a thriller and sure is living up to its hype.
