Jason Holder & Co. is set to face India in a 2-match Test series starting from Thursday (October 4). Their last series victory against India came in 2002 (2-1) and that too in front of their home crowd. The team has been ordinary on Indian turf from the last 20-25 years. So, just before the all-important series, let’s get back to some of the iconic moments from the past in India vs Windies cricket rivalry. Here they are:
India’s first-ever Test series victory in West Indies
This was India’s one of the finest moments in Test cricket history as they won the 5-match Test series 1-0 in the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. This series helped India make their mark in world cricket. The series also saw a little man making his debut for India. Yes! We are talking about batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar, who went on to score 774 runs in the series against a deadly bowling attack of West Indies.
Apart from Sunil Gavaskar, veteran batsman Dilip Sardesai amassed 642 runs in the series and helped India create history in West Indies. After this victory, India went on to win the Test series against England in England.
1983 World Cup final
Having won the previous 2 editions of the World Cup, the West Indies were on the verge of winning the third World Cup as they were facing India in the Final at Lord’s. India started the tournament as the underdogs but later realise that they can do it. After batting first in the final, Indians managed to score only 183 which was not enough against a quality team like West Indies.

The likes of Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd and Desmond Haynes could have scored this much easily but Indian bowlers had other plans. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal showed their class with the ball as the former champions failed to deliver this time, thus lost the battle by 43 runs in the end. This victory will remain as India’s biggest victory against West Indies to date.
Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell at Wankhede Stadium
Sachin Tendulkar is the primary reason why India loves cricket. The Master Blaster retired from the game in 2013 after playing his last series against West Indies that India won comfortably. The BCCI specially organised a farewell series for the legend by inviting the Caribbean side to play a 2-match Test series.
Tendulkar was magnificent in his final match as well as he scored a classy 74 before Darren Sammy took his catch at slips. He cried after taking that catch by knowing that the world won’t see the great man batting again. The series ended with the emotional speech of Sachin that bring every cricket fan in tears.
2016 World T20 semi-final
Men in Blue were clear favourites to win the match after putting a massive total of 192 in the semi-final of the World T20 2016. Virat Kohli smashed a 47-ball 89 to make sure the victory is on the cards. But when it comes to T20 cricket, West Indies can chase any total. They achieved a magnificent victory by 7 wickets with the help of fireworks from Andre Russell and Lendl Simmons in the end.
There were a couple of major mistakes made by the bowlers that became the hot topic for the next few days, however, the Windies played better cricket than India which resulted in their victory. The Caribbean side went on to lift the trophy at Eden Gardens by beating England in the final. Carlos Brathwaite hammered Ben Stokes in the final over to give West Indies their yet another defining moment.
