Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan might have a great Asia Cup recently but his red-ball cricket has not impressed selectors and therefore, the southpaw has been dropped from the Test squad against Windies. His partner in Tests Murali Vijay too was not considered for the home series.
The Bangalorean Mayank Agarwal has been included in the Test squad keeping in mind his fantastic run in the first class cricket. This would be a perfect opportunity for him to make a permanent spot in the national side. The selectors have also included Prithvi Shaw as an opener for the Test series. Here is the prediction for the 1st Test match between India and Windies.
Youngsters in the squad – Inclusion of Prithvi Shaw and Mohammad Siraj in the 2-match home Test series can’t be questioned. They both have a phenomenal record in the first-class cricket and it’s a big reward for the duo. It’s a big opportunity for both of them to prove their abilities just before the big series against Australia.
Kohli returns to the squad – Virat Kohli is back in the squad after a short break he took from the Asia Cup. His inclusion will strengthen the batting department, also the youngster like Prithvi Shaw can learn more from the current skipper. Kohli’s presence is a huge boost for India.
New opening pair – KL Rahul will most probably open the innings with the young gun Prithvi Shaw. In the absence of Dhawan and Vijay, the side could feel a bit pressure up the order. But if they can get off to a good start then things would go in India’s favour for sure.
Some new faces and experienced skipper – Jason Holder’s experience could work for Windies in this away series. His pace bowling alongside Sherman Lewis, the debutant, can give some tough fight to the Indians. Experience of Kemar Roach is a big boost for the Caribbeans.
Not a good track record – Windies have not won any Test series against India after 2002. They have lost all 6 Test series after 2002 which is a poor record. The team would like to win this time to bring back their old good days.
Absence of giants – At one time, Windies were known for their big faces like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and the best of all time Brian Charles Lara. Now, some have retired and some have issues with the board or not want to play Test cricket. This has declined their reputation in Test cricket which earlier was magnificent.
Cricwizz Prediction – The return of Virat Kohli is a big plus for India. This 2-match Test series can be a good practice for the upcoming big Australian tour. India are clearly the favourites to win the Paytm Trophy.
