Indian bowlers put a great effort on Day 1 after England skipper Joe Root elected to bat first. Things were drifting away from India after the 2nd session but the pacers made a terrific comeback by taking 6 wickets in the final session. Alastair Cook’s sensible knock of 71 was the only positive England had at the end of Day 1. At stumps, the hosts were 198/7 with Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid battling for some more runs. Here’s a quick look of what happened on Day 1:
48 runs and 6 wickets
Virat Kohli’s army made a brilliant use of the old ball by picking up 6 wickets. They gave away just 48 runs and bounced back in style on Day 1. Sam Curran, who was a thorn in India’s flesh in the past couple of outings, got out on a duck with Ishant’s magical delivery. Jasprit Bumrah too bowled brilliantly as he got both Cook and Root.
Inexperience Pant did it again
Rishabh Pant had a poor outing behind the stumps so far in this series. On Day 1, the young lad once again conceded 25+ byes in an innings for the second time. This would certainly raise some questions on Kohli’s captaincy after the series. Fans were expecting DK to play the 5th Test but Pant gets the nod again who has been ordinary so far.
Moeen’s slowest-ever fifty
Moeen Ali played his part on Day 1 by scoring a steady fifty off 167 balls. This was his slowest of all time which of course won’t be questioned because of England’s batting woes over the past few months. He tried to put England on the driver’s seat but Indian seamers were smart enough to pull things back. Ali has been tremendous with his bowling so far. If England could score another 50 runs for here, then the game once again will be in the middle.
Pressure on Dhawan and Rahul
Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul would be under a tremendous pressure of performing this time. Both the openers struggled to score big on this tour that raised questions over their inclusion. They have to perform well in this match to keep their place secure for the upcoming campaign against Windies and then Australia. There was a possibility of Prithvi Shaw playing in this game but Kohli decided to give another chance to their regular openers.
