England will look to carry forward their winning momentum in the third and final ODI against India at Leeds on Tuesday with the series levelled at 1-1. The third ODI is a virtual final and India would look to wrap up the limited-overs series against England with a win. Cricwizz takes a look at the strengths and weaknesses of England and India ahead of the third ODI and prediction of the match.
Depth in batting
England middle-order finally came to the party in the second ODI when Joe Root and Eoin Morgan notched up their best scores so far in the series. Root slammed 113 and Morgan made 53, while David Willey played a brilliant cameo of 50*. The trio raised their game when it mattered most, showing the depth in their batting. Root’s ton will give him a lot of confidence not only to him, but to the entire England unit who would finally feel they have cracked India’s spin code. England justified their No 1 ODI rank by bouncing back in the series with a bang.
Still suspect against spin
Although England raked up 300-plus total in the second ODI, Kuldeep Yadav managed to pick up three wickets. England are still suspect to spin. Virat Kohli would unleash both his spin duo to have a crack at England in the all-important third ODI. Can England prevail over Indian spin duo?
Although India had an off day in second ODI, they are too strong a batting team to not bounce back in the virtual final in third ODI. India have done it before in the third T20I to win the series. Rohit Sharma had led the win with a brilliant ton. Except Shikhar Dhawan, almost every Indian batsmen have been among the runs. Kohli might be tempted to go with the same XI, but he will go as per the conditions. He had omitted Kuldeep Yadav from third T20I and India went on to win the series.
Nevertheless, India have great depth in batting with three strong reserve players in Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer waiting for opportunity. Kohli might be tempted to play Dinesh Karthik in place of Suresh Raina.
India’s pace bowling options
India’s new-ball pair of Umesh Yadav and Siddarth Kaul has not been able to live up to expectations. They have not been the same ruthless as Bhuvneshwar Kumar-Jasprit Bumrah pair. India will hope Bhuvneshwar Kumar is fit to play the third ODI and give India the early breakthrough in England innings.[ad id=”29091″]
Prediction: England will be favourites after their brilliant performance in the second ODI. But India would come hard at England just like how they did in the third T20I in the earlier series. Our vote goes to England as they would look to live up to their reputation of No 1 ODI team.
Possible winner: England
