Sunrisers Hyderabad are easily one of the best teams in the competition. They top the points table at the moment with 12 points, winning 6 games out of 8. And they have been able to reach this position thanks to their spirited bowling attack. Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack does not need tall scores to defend. In fact, they are the only teams at the moment to defend three scores of 150 and less. And their spin attack comprising Shakib Al Hasan and Rashid Khan has played a major role in their success.
So, who has been a bigger contributor to SRH’s success between Rashid Khan and Shakib Al Hasan?
Cricwizz does an analysis of their performance to understand their contribution to SRH’s success.
The Afghanistan leg-spinner started well before being taken to task by Chris Gayle of KXIP and Ambati Rayudu of CSK. But Rashid Khan bounced back admirably to take 6 wickets in three games and help SRH defend below-par scores. Rashid’s contribution in the last three games against MI, KXIP and RR has been extra-ordinary as he has been able to apply brakes on scoring rate and make batsmen commit mistakes and get dismissed. His best spell so far has been 2/11 against Mumbai Indians as it helped SRH to defend a low total of 118.
Rashid has taken 10 wickets @ 23.20 in 8 matches. He is among the leading wicket-takers in IPL 2018 so far. He has bagged two man-of-the-match awards so far in 8 games. Rashid has been a true match-winner for SRH.
Rashid has played just four innings in this IPL and scored 24 runs. He bats lower down the order and is unable to contribute much. But his 4-ball 17* against CSK in a losing cause stands out as he gave glimmer of hope to SRH for an upset win and kept the team’s hopes alive till the last ball of the match.
Rashid’s fielding has been top class as he has taken some brilliant catches in the deep. His fielding lifts the overall ground work of SRH.
Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan has been a regular in SRH XI in IPL 2018. His left-arm orthodox spin adds variety to the bowling attack. Shakib has mostly bowled in powerplay overs and he has been successful in restricting the opposition batsmen from going for the kill. Shakib has managed eight wickets in IPL 2018 so far and all his victims have top-order batsmen mainly.
Shakib has been able to contain the flow of runs and take wickets at important junctures of the match. He has a good economy rate of 7.21. Shakib’s bowling has been an asset to the team. Overall, he has taken 8 wickets @ 25.25 with best bowling figures of 2/18 in 8 matches so far.
Shakib has in fact done injustice to his batting talent. He has scored 123 runs @ 20.50 in 8 matches. He has good starts, but failed to capitalise on it. He has four scores of 20 plus in 8 innings and Shakib’s lack of runs has hurt the team’s chances.
Shakib has been brilliant in fielding as well, taking some brilliant catches in the in-field, lifting the standards of SRH’s groundwork in IPL.
Shakib would have been the winner in this battle against Rashid Khan if he has scored any match-winning performance with the bat. A score in 20s is not enough to justify Shakib’s all-round skills. Hence, Rashid Khan wins this battle as he has bowled better, match-winning spells than Shakib in Indian Premier League 2018 so far. Our vote goes to Rashid.
