IPL has gone big in the last decade. It has seen many ups and downs, but still remains one of the best T20 competitions across the cricketing globe. Its aura is so vast that it enjoys better success than T20I contests between national teams.
IPL has unearthed new talent, given fresh lease of life to discarded and retired players and helped cricketers earn millions. Besides that, there are some cricketers who enjoy a much higher success in IPL than in T20Is. Here are some stars who enjoy a far better success in IPL than in T20Is for their nations.
The former Indian skipper has always batted in the lower-order in T20Is to finish things off for his team. He holds the record of taking the most number of T20Is to score his maiden fifty in this format at the international level. But in IPL, he boasts of an impressive record for Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant. As a skipper for CSK, he has repeatedly promoted himself to get quick runs for his team. Dhoni has scored 17 fifties in a decade of IPL. He has amassed 3561 runs @ 37.88 in 159 matches for CSK and RPS. In 87 T20Is, he has just managed 1380 runs @ 36.31 with one fifty.

He has led KKR to two IPL titles. He has opened the batting for KKR and has been one of the most successful openers in IPL. He will play for his old team Delhi Daredevils in 2018 IPL. In a decade of IPL, Gambhir has scored 4132 runs @ 31.54 with 35 fifties in 148 matches for KKR and DD. He is the fourth highest run-getter in IPL. But in T20Is for India, he averages 27.41 with 7 fifties in 37 matches. Gambhir too has opened the batting for India in T20Is. But his records in IPL is much more better in IPL than in T20Is.
The West Indian cricketer had been a big hit in IPL, especially for his second franchisee Royal Challengers Bangalore. But his unpredictable form saw him being released from the RCB squad in 2018 IPL. But Gayle has been a big run-scorer in IPL and enjoys a better average in this event than in T20Is for West Indies. Gayle averages 41.20 in IPL, while 33.80 in T20Is for West Indies. He has cracked 5 tons and 21 fifties in IPL. But in T20Is, he has 2 tons and 13 fifties. Gayle has scored 3626 runs for RCB, KKR in 101 matches in IPL. In 55 T20Is for West Indies, Gayle has scored 1589 runs.
The Australian cricketer led Sunrisers Hyderabad to 2016 IPL title. And he averages an impressive 40.54 in IPL. In T20Is for Australia, he averages a poor 26.77. Warner is more productive with the bat when he turns out for his team in IPL. He has scored 4041 runs with 3 tons and 36 fifties in 114 matches in IPL. In T20Is for Australia, he is yet to score a ton. He has scored 1767 runs with 13 fifties in 69 T20Is for Australia.
The leg-spinner is the second highest wicket-taker in IPL with 134 wickets in 126 matches for Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has even taken three hat-tricks in IPL. But Mishra has been an under-achiever in national colours across formats. He managed to play just 10 T20Is for India in a decade of international cricket, taking 16 wickets.
The West Indian all-rounder has been a great utility bower with his exceptional death bowling skills. He was retained by Chennai Super Kings for 2018 IPL. He has been one of the highest wicket-takers in IPL with 122 wickets @ 22.58 in 106 games for CSK, MI, GL. But in T20Is for West Indies, he has been an under-achiever, managing just 52 wicket s @ 28.26 in 66 T20IS.
The Sri Lankan bowler tops the list of wicket-takers in IPL with 154 wickets. He, however, went unsold in 2018 IPL as Mumbai Indians released him and no franchisees bid for him. He has been part of three IPL titles for Mumbai. Malinga also enjoys a good bowling average of 19.01 in IPL. Malinga has also been brilliant for his team Sri Lanka in T20Is. He has taken 90 wickets @ 19.77 in 68 T20Is for Sri Lanka. He led Sri Lanka to World T20 title in 2014.
