Afghanistan hero Mohammad Shahzad turns 30 today. He was suspended for anti-doping violations and has served his punishment. He was eligible to play from January 17, 2018. He also registered for the 2018 IPL auction, but found no buyers. On his birthday, Cricwizz takes a look at few lesser-known things about the birthday boy.
He is also known as Shehzad Mohammadi. He also has a namesake in international cricket. The other Mohammad Shahzad is from UAE who has played 6 ODIs and 20 T20Is for his country.
Shahzad holds the record of most scores of fifties in knockout matches in T20I tournaments. Shahzad has four such scores compared to Virat Kohli’s three.
Shahzad is the only player in the history of cricket to score two scores of fifty in two different international matches on the same day. Shahzad achieved this impossible during the Desert T20 Challenge in 2017.
Shahzad holds almost all batting records for Afghanistan in ODIs and T20Is. From highest score, most runs and most scores of fifty and more, Shahzad holds all these records for Afghanistan in both formats of the game. Shahzad was recently overtaken by Mohammad Nabi as the leading run-getter for Afghanistan in ODIs.
For Shahzad, his top six T20 players are MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, Mitchell Starc and AB de Villiers.
Shahzad has once smashed five sixes in an over in a domestic T20 match. Shahzad achieved this feat when he made 90 for Kabul Eagles against Mis Ainak Knights in Shpageeza Cricket League final. He smashed five sixes in an over off Rahmat Shah’s bowling.
Shahzad was the second leading run-getter in T20Is in 2016 behind India’s Virat Kohli. Shahzad made 520 runs @ 37.14 in 15 T20I matches for Afghanistan in 2016.
Shahzad used to collect Sachin Tendulkar’s photo and paste it on his bat during childhood. Shahzad said, “I had a passion for cricket from a very young age and used to watch a lot of it on TV. In a small toffee box, there used to be Sachin Tendulkar’s photograph so when the shopkeeper used to finish the toffees and throw away the container, I would use my scissors to cut his photograph and put his sticker at the back of my bat.”
Shahzad is the only keeper to effect 5 dismissals in a T20I innings. He achieved the feat against Oman at Abu Dhabi in 2015.
