The IPL 2018 auction has been rather unique for various reasons. Few stars such as Yuvraj Singh who were the most expensive in previous seasons have had to settle for their base price. On the other hand, uncapped players such as Krunal Pandya laughed all the way to the bank with Rs 8.8 crore as Mumbai Indians retained him with Right to Match card. There were few marquee players such as Eoin Morgan, Lasith Malinga who went unsold. Chris Gayle got lucky as he was bought by KXIP for Rs 2 crore at the third bidding.
Besides everything, there was another strange co-incidence when Royal Challengers Bangalore happened to buy all the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers who had destroyed them for just 49 in the last IPL edition.
In Eden Gardens on April 23, 2017, RCB were asked to chase 132 for a win by KKR. Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle opened the innings. Kohli fell for a golden duck to Nathan Coulter-Nile. And then the procession followed with RCB being bowled out for 49 in just 9.4 overs. Kedar Jadhav emerged the highest scorer for his team with 9.
Coulter-Nile took 3/21, Umesh Yadav 1/15, Chris Woakes 3/6 and Colin de Grandhomme 3/4 as KKR won the match by a huge margin of 82 runs.
Cut to IPL 2018 auction, RCB bought Chris Woakes for Rs 7.4 crore, Grandhomme for Rs 2.2 crore, Coulter-Nile for Rs 2.2 crore and Umesh Yadav for Rs 4.2 crore.
IPL can not get stranger than this.
