As the time for the IPL 2018 auction nears, it was revealed that over 1100 players have signed up to be a part of this mega extravaganza.
IPL released a long list of 1122 players to the eight franchises which include 281 capped players and 838 uncapped players, including 778 Indians and three players from the Associate nations. The list will be trimmed as the franchises shortlist the names of the players they want in the auction.
The IPL has been an extravaganza with the bat, with fours and sixes and big scores becoming the norm. But bowlers have also etched their names in the annals of the IPL based on some brilliant performances and franchises know that it is the bowlers that win the match for the team.
Here are 10 such bowlers who will be looking to fetch some big bids in the IPL 2018 auction:
Yuzvendra Chahal changed the scene at the Royal Challengers Bangalore with his impressive leg spin. He picked 20 plus wickets in the last two seasons for the team and now he will feature in the auction. Leg spinners have always been impactful in the IPL, right from Shane Warne, Anil Kumble to Adam Zampa and Chahal himself.
With teams looking to play two leg spinners in the team, Chahal can be the leading bowler for any franchise that bids for him.
After missing the last two seasons of IPL, Australia’s premier strike bowler Mitchell Starc has put his name back into the auction. Starc was highly impactful for RCB when he played two seasons for them and with more experience and with his ability to take wickets whenever he wants; Starc will be eyeing a huge contract bid in the upcoming auction.
Rashid Khan was picked up by SRH for INR 4 crores in the last year’s IPL auction. He was brilliant in his performance throughout the IPL for SRH and will be expected to continue his good run in this year’s IPL too.
Rashid has had a good stint with BBL this year and with his ability to give the captain crucial breakthroughs, any team will want to have him in their lineup. The 19-year-old leggie is also a handy batsman and can tonk a few down the order when quick runs are needed.
Trent Boult has had a brilliant few matches against West Indies and Pakistan recently. He picked up figures of 7/34 against West Indies and then picked 5/17 against Pakistan. He has previously played for SRH in IPL and with his knack of swinging the ball early and picking top order wickets; Boult becomes an asset to any team he plays for. With the teams like Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings looking out for good fast bowlers, Boult can expect to get a massive bidding war going for himself.
Pat Cummins is back on the cricketing radar with an impressive tour to India and his performances for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2017. Now even fitter and faster than before, Cummins commands a premium price in the IPL 2018 auctions. There is an outside chance that Delhi Daredevils might use their right-to-match card to pick him in the auction, but it will definitely come at a hefty price.
Chris Woakes made his IPL debut in 2017 for Kolkata Knight Riders and filled in beautifully for the absence of Andre Russell. Woakes picked top order wickets with alarming regularity and this coupled with his ability to bat in middle order makes him a darling for the franchises.
With ECB becoming more lenient with their players participating for a full season in the IPL, Woakes will be a handy pick for a team looking for a quality fast bowling all-rounder.
Kuldeep Yadav was not retained by KKR for the IPL 2018 and this means, Kuldeep will be a free agent in the upcoming auctions. Kuldeep has proved that he can make a big impact on the game even when bowling to some of the biggest hitters of the ball in the IPL. With 18 wickets so far in the IPL, Kuldeep has shown that he is ready to lead the bowling attack of any team, which chooses to invest in him.
Kagiso Rabada played for Delhi Daredevils in the last IPL edition and though he only picked 6 wickets in 6 games; Rabada made enough of noise with his speed and toe-crushing yorkers. With many teams looking for a young fast bowler that can bowl and intimidate the opposition batting, Rabada will definitely go for a huge sum of money in the upcoming IPL 2018 auction.
Mustafizur Rahman lit the IPL 2016 on fire with 17 wickets in 16 matches. He gave the IPL one of its highlight moments, when he yorked Andre Russell so hard, that he fell over, trying to save his toes. He is known for picking wickets upfront and is a street-smart cricketer, who has a bag of tricks which make him a dangerous bowler in the death too.
Mustafizur Rahman, nicknamed “the fizz”, will be looking for a more than big bidding war for himself as he goes into the IPL 2018 auction.
Mitchell McClenaghan proved to be Mumbai Indians’ savior when Lasith Malinga wasn’t available for them in past few seasons. Even when Malinga came back, McClenaghan continued to render his services to MI camp and even took them to IPL wins in 2015 and 2017.
Now playing as a T20 mercenary, after refusing a contract with New Zealand, McClenaghan will be on the top of the list when franchises jot down the names of players who they want to buy in the IPL 2018 auctions. McClenaghan is a strapping fast bowler, who can swing the ball at express pace and bowl yorkers and slower balls at the death overs.
McClenaghan has proven that he is definitely a must buy for any team in the auction.
