Everyone is talking about Virat Kohli and his unbelievable consistency across all formats at the international level. He scored another fifty in the second innings of Delhi Test after scoring a double ton in the first innings. Kohli totalled 293 in the match. But hold on, there is another batsman who is silently making the right noises with his consistency. We are talking about Rohit Sharma who too cracked a fifty in the second innings of the Delhi Test. In fact, it was Rohit Sharma’s fifty consecutive scores of fifty and more in his last five consecutive Test innings.
Rohit Sharma made a comeback to Test cricket in the series against Sri Lanka. He was not selected for the first Test at Eden Gardens. But in the second Test at Nagpur, he slammed 102* teaming up with captain Kohli (213) to help India to a match-winning total. In the Delhi Test, Rohit slammed 65 and 50* in the two innings.
Before this series, Rohit had last played a Test match in September last year against New Zealand. He was in good nick in the series before he was injured and had to undergo a surgery. In his last two innings in the Test series against New Zealand, Rohit had cracked 82 at Kolkata and 51* at Indore. In the five innings in that series, Rohit had scored 238 runs @ 79.33 with three scores of fifty.
In his last five Test innings, Rohit had scores of 82, 51*, 102*, 65 and 50* at an average of 175.
With this consistency, Rohit had ensured a few things. He has booked himself a place in the squad for the tour of South Africa for the Test series. Rohit might even be considered ahead of Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI in the Test series in South Africa as the latter has been through a horrible run of form in the Sri Lankan series, aggregating just 17 runs in 5 innings.
Rohit has breathed a new life into his Test career, but would need to keep producing the big knocks on a consistent level as competition for places in the playing XI is enormous. Besides, Rohit may have to sit out if captain Kohli goes for five-bowler plan and Rahane in the playing XI in the South Africa Test series. Rohit needs to grab every opportunity that comes his way in Test cricket.
