Virat Kohli is scaling one success after another. He cracked his third consecutive ton in three innings in the ongoing series vs Sri Lanka when he slammed an unbeaten 156 at the end of day 1 at Delhi against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
With this ton, Kohli went past many records and also created a few records on the way. But no matter how quick Kohli scales past a record or create one, there is a stiff competition from other batsman from another nation. And that is none other than Australian skipper-batsman in Steve Smith.
The Australia skipper has been phenomenal with the bat and is leading from the front in the Ashes Test against England. He and Smith are regarded as one of the best Test batsmen of this era.
Although Kohli created a few brilliant records on the way to his 20th Test ton, he, however, came second to Smith in few respects. Let’s have a look.
105 vs 99 Kohli took 105 innings to crack his 20th Test ton. But he is the fifth fastest to 20th Test ton. Smith reached 20th Test in 99 innings and is the fourth fastest to this landmark. The other quickest batsmen than Kohli are Sir Don Bradman (55), Sunil Gavaskar (93) and Mathew Hayden (95).
50 vs 49 Both Smith and Kohli achieved the feat of scoring 3000 Test runs as captain on the same day. But Smith did it one innings less than Kohli. Smith took 49 innings, while Kohli took 50 innings to score 3000 Test runs as skipper. Kohli is fifth fastest to this feat behind Don Bradman (37), Mahela Jayawardene (48) and Graham Gooch (49).
20 vs 21 Since Virat Kohli’s debut, only one cricketer has score more Test tons than him and he is none other than Smith who has 21 centuries in this format.
67.40 vs 71.69 Smith averages 71.69 as skipper of Australia in 49 Test innings, but Kohli averages 67.40 as Test skipper of India in 50 innings.
17 vs 23 Kohli’s tally of fifties and more is 17 (13 ton and 4 fifties) as Test captain. But Smith’s tally of fifties and more is 23 (13 tons and 10 fifties) as Test skipper.
P.S: This stats are till the first day’s play of the Delhi Test between India and Sri Lanka and Adelaide Test between Australia and England.
