Khulna Titans overcome a spirited Rangpur Riders to win a thriller and top the points table in 2017 Bangladesh Premier League clash at Chittagong on Friday. With this win, Titans take the top spot with 11 points (five wins out of 8 games). Titans successfully defended a score of 158/8 by 9 runs against Riders. Titans skipper Mahmudullah was the star performer with a knock of 59.
Rangpur Riders chose to field first on winning the toss. They put Titans on the backfoot straight away scalping the openers Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Rilee Rossouw cheaply. Mashrafe Mortaza dismissed Shanto for 20, while Rossouw fell to Gazi for 11. Rubel Hossain then got into the act and dismissed Afif Hossain for 9.
Titans skipper Mahmudullah then dropped anchor to score a brilliant 36-ball 59 with 6 fours and 3 sixes. He fell in the 16th over and Titans looked in danger of falling below-par score. But Carlos Brathwaite played a cameo of 6-ball 11 with one four and one six to take the team’s score to 158/8.
Riders began poorly, losing their explosive openers – Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum – for 20 runs on the scoreboard. Soon, Riders were reduced to 45/4 with Afif Hossain taking two wickets. Ravi Bopara and Nahidul Islam then rebuild the innings with 100-run stand in 11.4 overs.
But Islam fell via run out in the last over to turn the momentum against it. Islam fell for 43-ball 58 with 7 fours. With 10 needed off the last ball, Bopara holed out to Afif Hossain off Junaid Khan’s bowling. Riders were restricted to 149/6 and lost the match by 9 runs.
