IPL 2017: Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Gujarat Lions (GL), Wankhede – Match prediction
Mumbai Indians will take on Gujarat Lions in the 16th contest of IPL 2017 at Wankhede on Sunday. Mumbai have won their last three matches and Gujarat registered their first win of the season against Rising Pune Supergiant on Friday. As both teams are coming off a win, the confidence levels in both camps will be pretty high.
Mumbai Indians: Strengths
Pollard’s back in form – Mumbai Indians were struggling at 7/4 against Royal Challengers Bangalore the other day and it was the big West Indian Kieron Pollard who fought back and played a match winning knock to get the Mumbai Indians over the line in the run chase.
Pandya brothers’ all-round contribution – Hardik and Krunal – both brothers have come up with exceptional performances in Mumbai’s wins in IPL 2017. Krunal got AB de Villiers’ wicket and stitched in a crucial partnership along with Pollard against RCB and the two brothers were at the crease when Mumbai Indians hit those winning runs against Virat’s Challengers. In fact, they have become a pivotal part of MI in the past two seasons and have proved to be match winners in their own way.
Mumbai Indians: Weakness
Rohit Sharma’s poor run in season 10 – MI skipper Rohit Sharma hasn’t been able to get into double digits so far in IPL 2017. Mumbai have won three out of four games but their skipper is struggling big time. Rohit Sharma is considered India’s best opener, so the opening slot is the best position for the Hit-man. Going ahead, Rohit should open for MI so that he gets back his lost touch.
Mumbai Indians (Probable XI) – Jos Buttler✈️, Parthiv Patel, Rohit Sharma, Nitish Rana, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard✈️, Hardik Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan✈️, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga✈️, Jasprit Bumrah.
Gujarat Lions: Strengths
Top order firing – Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum opened against Rising Pune Supergiant and were at their destructive best. Both of them struck plenty of meaty blows in Gujarat’s run chase and put the opponents on the back foot with their aggressive hitting. At the same time, Suresh Raina has been consistent with the bat and is scoring runs for his team on a regular basis. The skipper is leading by example and Gujarat Lions seem to have found a settled batting unit with Baz and Smith as the two openers.
Andrew Tye’s brilliant debut – The Australian T20 specialist bowled a special spell and bagged a 5-wicket haul on his IPL debut against Pune. Also, his 5-for included a hat-trick that helped Gujarat restrict its opposition to a relatively lesser total than expected. AJ Tye will play a crucial role for the Lions for the rest of the season looking at his heroics on debut.
Gujarat Lions: Weakness
Unsettled bowling unit – Apart from Andrew Tye, none of the Lions bowlers have been up to the mark this year. They have gone for plenty and Gujarat need to get this problem sorted before it gets too late. Their batting is a packed with power hitters, just that their bowling needs to improve and complement their lethal batsmen. Hopefully, their bowling unit gets settled with the arrival of Andrew Tye.
Gujarat Lions (Probable XI) – Dwayne Smith✈️, Brendon McCullum✈️, Suresh Raina, Aaron Finch✈️, Dinesh Karthik, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Andre Tye✈️, Praveen Kumar, Basil Thampi, Shadab Jakati.
Pitch – All Mumbai games have been high scoring so far, but this being a day game, might be a relatively low scoring match. No, doubt there are some powerful hitters in both teams but the slowness of this track in the afternoon might result in a low scoring affair.
Prediction – Gujarat Lions won their previous match and have just got the momentum going along their way. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have won three games in a row, but they were in early trouble against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Had it not been Pollard’s knock, they might have lost that match. Also, with AJ Tye among wickets, Lions will be expecting him to fire against Mumbai Indians too. Dwayne Smith is back as the opener for Gujarat and he’ll desperate to perform against his ex-franchise that is the Mumbai Indians. Looking at these factors, Gujarat Lions are the favorites to win this contest.
Possible winner – Gujarat Lions
