Royal Challengers Bangalore dropped Chris Gayle for the match against Kings XI Punjab to accommodate AB de Villiers. RCB wanted to continue with their pace bowling attack of Tymal Mills, Billy Stanlake and hence, dropped Gayle for AB. Shane Watson as skipper-opener was the fourth overseas player in the playing XI for RCB against Mumbai Indians.
Gayle has not been in the best form of late, but his presence in the middle creates fear in the minds of the opposition bowlers. And the best thing about Gayle is that if he gets going, he will literally bat the opposition out of the match.
You never know when Gayle-storm can create havoc in IPL 2017. And whenever it happens, it will spell doom for the opposition. But RCB have to look at getting their combination right to give themselves the best chance of winning the match and the title.
If RCB need to bring in Gayle, they have to look for a backup in the pace department as Stanlake is the only overseas player that the West Indian can replace. AB, Watson, and Mills are automatic selections for three of the four spots.
Indian pace bowlers Sreenath Aravind, and Aniket Choudhary were listless in the first match against Sunrisers. But if RCB have to bring back Gayle into the batting unit, especially without their star batsman Virat Kohli, they have to trust Aravind to do the job for them. Aravind is a seasoned campaigner for RCB and should get another shot despite the hammering he received against Sunrisers in IPL 2017 opener.
In 2016 IPL, Gayle struggled for form in the initial stages of the tournament, but bounced back to score some runs at the top of the order in the latter half of the competition. He and Virat Kohli put up a century partnership in the final to give RCB a real chance of winning the title. But the duo’s dismissals cut short RCB’s dream of winning their maiden IPL title.
Gayle has Kohli’s constant support. And once the regular skipper is back, Gayle will be a permanent fixture in the playing XI and you never know with the support of Kohli, Gayle can strike his famous shots to all parts of the ground.
