Indian cricketers look all tense and passionate when they take to cricket field. But they do have a funny bone and don’t hesitate to crack a prank whenever the opportunity arises. Cricwizz takes a look at some of the hilarious pranks that Indian cricketers played to keep the moods light.
Sachin’s prank on driver in 2002 Caribbean Series: Once Sachin, Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta went for lunch in Trinidad during the 2002 series in the Caribbean. The trio hailed a cab and Sachin sat in front with the driver, while the two sat behind. On being asked where they have come from, Sachin replied they are from the United States and are there in the Caribbean for a holiday. The driver believed Sachin and started sharing that cricket is the most popular sport in the Caribbean. The driver asked them to watch out for the clash between Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara in the upcoming Test. Sachin kept a straight face during this conversation and did not reveal his identity, while the other two Indian cricketers had a hearty laugh.
MS Dhoni’s ghost prank: Before coming into the national team, MS Dhoni served as a Train Ticket Examiner from 2001-2003. During his stay in the railway quarters, Dhoni pulled off a prank. He and a few of his friends covered themselves in bed sheets and walked around the complex late in the night. The guards were fooled that the area was haunted by ghosts. The incident made big news the following day.
When Ganguly bowled a googly to Yuvraj: Ahead of his debut at Nairobi in 2002, captain Sourav Ganguly made a young Yuvraj all tensed up when he asked if he ready to open the innings. Yuraj said he is ready for the challenge, but it gave him sleepless night due to that order from the skipper. The next morning, Ganguly revealed it was just a joke. The prank nevertheless has no effect on as Yuvraj made a spectacular debut in that series. Yuvraj, however, had his revenge when he masterminded a prank on his skipper Sourav Ganguly in 2005.
Sachin’s prank on Sourav Ganguly: Sachin was a bully in his young days and to curb his behavious, his brother Ajit had introduced him to cricket and got him enrolled into a coaching centre. He carried forward his mischievous ways into international cricket. Sachin had once put a hose pipe into Sourav Ganguly’s room. Dada woke up to find his cricketing gear floating in water.
Ajit Wadekar’s birthday: During a series in New Zealand, Ajit Wadekar was the manager of the team. He retired early to bed on March 31 and next day (April 1) was his birthday. Wadekar remembers receiving a knock on his door around midnight and he found Sachin there with a worried look. Sachin told him that something has happened to Kapil Dev two floors away. When Wadekar and Sachin reached the room, they found the whole cricket team was present with a cake and champagne bottle. Even belly dancers were invited for the party. Wadekar said, “I wondered this must have been Sachin’s idea as Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar), though a commentator on that tour, was not to be seen. Sunny is famous for his pranks but this must have been Sachin’s idea.”
Irfan Pathan fooled into eating spicy food: During his debut series Down Under in 2003, Irfan Pathan went for a meal with a few seniors, including Sachin Tendulkar. Irfan was not too sure how sushi tasted. Sachin advised him it’s sweet in taste and have a go at it. “But the sauce was so spicy that the moment it reached my tongue, I almost had hot air blowing out of my ears and was all red,” revealed Pathan to a website. And all the seniors had a hearty laugh.
When Team India pulled off a prank on Sourav Ganguly: During an international fixture at Kochi in 2005, the entire team decided to play a prank on their captain, Sourav Ganguly, during a team meeting. They managed a newspaper printout where they had put up a fabricated interview of Sourav Ganguly criticising his own players. Ganguly pleaded innocence even as Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra stormed out of the meeting. Yuvraj Singh was the mastermind of the whole prank. Ganguly was on the verge of breaking down before Rahul Dravid spilled the beans. “Dada picked up a bat and chased all of us out of the dressing room,” Yuvraj said.
Sachin plays prank on social media: After retirement, Sachin Tendulkar has become an avid user of social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Once he posted a pic of him being stranded as he missed the last bus. He tweeted, ““In Great Haseley Oxfordshire. Missed the last bus, can anyone give me a lift??” Fans went crazy to help out Sachin. The batting legend later revealed that it was just a prank. He posted another picture stating, “Not the bus. But some seem to have missed the joke.”
