There have been some strange coincidences in Indian cricket that go beyond logic and belief. Cricwizz takes a look at some of the amazing coincidences in Indian cricket.
Roger Binny debuted and exited Test at Bangalore: Very rare that a cricketer gets to make his international debut at home ground. And if you finish your career at home ground as well and that too against the same opponent whom you debuted against, then that’s quite a coincidence. Roger Binny, former Indian all-rounder, played for Karnataka in domestic cricket. He made his Test debut against Pakistan at Bangalore in 1979. He ended his Test career also at Bangalore against Pakistan in 1987.
Father, son playing their first Test in India at home ground: The father-son duo of Roger and Stuart Binny played their first Test in India at home ground. While Roger made his debut at Bangalore against Pakistan in 1979, son Stuart too played his first Test in India at the Garden City against South Africa in 2015. The Bangalore Test was Stuart Binny’s first in India and sixth overall.
Two Indian captains making zero on ODI debut: Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar had a disastrous start to his ODI career, making a second-ball duck in his first 50-overs match against Pakistan in 1989. He goes on to lead India in ODIs. Similarly, MS Dhoni was run-out for a first-ball duck against Bangladesh in 2004, but leads India to two World Cup titles.
Mohammad Azharuddin’s tryst with 99: Who thought a career will come to an end after scoring a ton in the last Test, which turned out to be his 99th Test. Mohammad Azharuddin struck 102 in a losing cause against South Africa at Bangalore in 2000, but was soon handed a life ban for match fixing. He ended with 99 Tests and co-incidentally had a highest Test score of 199.
Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli’s maiden IPL tons: The maiden IPL tons of Mumbai Indians’ Sachin Tendulkar and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli have had a lot of things in common. Both were captains and openers when they struck 100 not out each as their maiden IPL tons. Sachin’s 100 not out came against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011, while Kohli’s 100 not out came against Gujarat Lions in 2016. Both the tons came on the last ball of the innings. And both the opposition teams were playing the IPL for the first time.
