Afghanistan started their journey in T20Is and played their first ever T20I against Ireland way back in 2010. The first time Afghanistan played in the shortest format of the sport, they were outplayed by the Irish in a low scoring affair. However, this team from Afghanistan won its next three matches in the shortest format of the sport beating teams like Canada, Scotland and Ireland itself. Since then, they have never looked back! Afghanistan have played a lot of T20 cricket in the past few years against various teams but if you look at their record against Zimbabwe, it’s pretty astonishing. A team which once used to give tough competition to top class teams have been humiliated by Afghanistan each and every time these two teams have played a T20 International. Against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan has played 5 T20I and have won all five of them. They haven’t let the minnows from Africa win even a single contest and perhaps that is one reason why Zimbabwe are ranked lower than Afghanistan in the ICC Test rankings. On the 2015 tour of Zimbabwe, Afghanistan thrashed the hosts by a 2-0 margin and in 2016 they have beaten them on three occasions, once in India and twice at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
It’s good to see a team emerging in such a way and dominating other sides at the International level. Will the Zimbabwean cricket team be able to take a revenge of these five successive defeats? Or will Afghanistan continue to dominate them just like they have done in the past. Well, it’s definitely going to be an interesting battle.
