The league stage is done and dusted and we now move to the business end of the Indian Premier League, 2016. It has been an IPL which has belonged to the batsmen as we have seen many high-scoring contests and tons of runs scored. Sixes and boundaries being hit at will, but there have been a few occasions where the bowlers have chipped in with valuable contributions too.
Let’s have a look at the top 5 bowling spells in the league stage of IPL 2016.
1) Adam Zampa’s 6 for 19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad
This spell by Adam Zampa tops the list for the best bowling figures in IPL 2016. In fact, this is one of the best spells in IPL history as Zampa became only the second bowler after Sohail Tanvir to claim six wickets in an innings. It was way back in 2008 that the Pakistani bowler claimed six wickets for 14 runs for Rajasthan Royals. So to achieve that feat after 8 long years deserves accolades. Zampa’s six wickets included big names like Kane Williamson, Yuvraj Singh and Moises Henriques to go along with Deepak Hooda, Naman Ojha and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Due to his splendid bowling effort, Rising Pune Supergiants were able to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to an average score of 137. Unfortunately, Pune batsmen couldn’t make the most of this fine bowling effort and they fell short of the target by a small margin of 4 runs. Nevertheless, it was one of the finest bowling spells we got to see in the IPL.
2) Dwayne Smith’s 4 for 8 against Kolkata Knight Riders
On a green deck at Kanpur, Suresh Raina asked Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. What followed next was a surprise! Dwayne Smith who is known for his power-hitting, bowled a magnificent spell as the track proved to be a paradise for him. KKR batsmen had no answers to Smith’s posers and most of the batsmen were outclassed by him. In the end he gave away only 8 runs and the 4 wickets he took included Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Piyush Chawla and Shakib Al Hasan. Restricting Kolkata Knight Riders to a paltry 124 also helped him bag the Man of the Match award as Gujarat Lions overhauled the total with 6 wickets to spare.
3) Amit Mishra’s 4 for 11 against Kings XI Punjab
In a home game at the Feroz Shah Kota, Amit Mishra left Kings XI Punjab’s batsmen clueless. His flighted deliveries, his straighter ones and his googlies, were an absolute treat to watch. We rarely see bowlers dominate in the shortest format of the game and this was one of such spell. Amit Mishra dismissed Manan Vohra, Shaun Marsh, David Miller and Glenn Maxwell one after another and broke the spine of the Kings XI batting line-up. Punjab were only able to set a target of 112 and in the end Delhi Daredevils won the match comprehensively by 8 wickets, thanks to Amit Mishra bowling one of his best spells in the IPL.
4) Andre Russell’s 4 for 20 against Kings XI Punjab
Having set a target of 165 for Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Rider’s Andre Russell got his team to a dream start while defending the total. Dismissing Marcus Stoinis and Manan Vohra within the first 3 overs, Russell put Kings XI Punjab on the back foot right away. Later, he got the important scalp of David Miller and also defended 11 runs in the last over of the match and as a result of his superb spell Kolkata Knight Riders won a close contest against Kings XI Punjab at Eden Gardens.
5) Axar Patel’s 4 for 21 against Gujarat Lions
Table-toppers, Gujarat Lions’ batsmen were made to look average by Axar Patel in front of their home crowd in Rajkot as the Lions who are known to be good chasers failed to chase down 155. The reason behind this was Axar’s heroics with the ball. Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo were bamboozled by the left-arm spinner and they fell short of the target by 23 runs. The under-dogs won the contest and Patel was adjudged the Man of the Match.
