The season 8 of Indian Premier League has entered its second week and has delivered its size of controversy as well as good cricket. All teams have played more than two games and by the looks of it, Rajasthan Royals is the in-form team in this tourney. However, Shane Watson’s side was beaten by a spirited Kings XI Punjab in a thrilling Super Over thus ending RR’s unbeaten run of five matches.
Meanwhile, Delhi Daredevils also found something to cheer for at last as they clinched two wins against Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad, breaking their 11-match losing streak. Also, the IPL 8 saw 2013 Champions, Mumbai Indians lose three consecutive matches and thus leaving their fans frustrated.
There have many other instances that caught our eye and kept the social media abuzz. Here are those moments:
On the last day of the week, the Indian Premier League got everyone’s heartbeat pumping. The two teams involved were – Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. In one of the most pulsating finishes ever, this year’s edition saw it’s first ever Super Over as Kings XI Punjab came from behind to beat ‘top of the table’ Rajasthan Royals and end their 5-match winning streak.
After both teams finished on 191 at the end of the match, KXIP scored 15/1 in the Super Over as Shaun Marsh belted Chris Morris for three consecutive boundaries. In reply, Mitchell Johnson yorked Shane Watson and keeper Wriddhiman Saha kept his cool to run-out James Faulkner out as KXIP broke their three-match losing streak.
Kieron Pollard’s ‘taped’ act
One of the most controversial incidents that hogged the limelight was between Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle. During the match held between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard put on sellotape on his mouth after the umpires rapped him for his on-field banter with fellow West Indian and Bangalore batsman Chris Gayle. Pollard’s antics didn’t stay far as the cameras picked up his antics quickly as he constantly appeared on the giant screen, bringing a smile on his Mumbai Indian’s coaching staff that included the likes of Ricky Ponting and Robin Singh among others.
The AB de Villiers Show
South African batting hero AB de Villiers is very much a superstar in this IPL and it didn’t take much time for former India captain Sunil Gavaskar to coin some memorable words. In RCB’s match against KKR, AB de Villiers dropped Gautam Gambhir on 31 to which the Indian icon commented, “ABCDE – AB Can’t Do Everything!”
Shane Watson’s return
During the start of IPL, Aussie World Cup hero Shane Watson Australian couldn’t make the cut in his RR squad due to former’s injury. But the all-rounder made a sensational return to form during their match against CSK where Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane struck an unbeaten 76 and Watson scored73 as they shared a record 144-run opening stand, guiding RR home with an impressive display of shot-making.
Maxwell’s sudden blip
Last season, Kings XI Punjab was on a roll all thanks to their Oz superstar, Glenn Maxwell. But forward 2015, KXIP are sweating over Maxwell’s batting form as the Australian is yet to hit the mark. So far in this tourney, ‘the Big Show’ has got 62 runs at 12.40 and the team expects more from The Aussie, who was in fine nick at the World Cup. Furthermore, ‘Max’ has blamed the emotional joy of winning the World Cup as a reason for his slump of form for Punjab.
