Over the past seven seasons of the Indian Premier League, Delhi Daredevils failed miserably to stage a title bid and instead, have plunged to the deep end of IPL table. From the likes of Glenn McGrath to Kevin Pietersen, Delhi Daredevils had every superstar from the world of cricket but could not surge ahead. Last season, Delhi finished last despite having the likes of Kevin Pietersen in their ranks and Gary Kirsten as coach. With only 2 wins and 12 losses, Delhi had put up one of their worst performances in the IPL history.
No wonder, the owners let go of all their players and have roped the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan to stabilise things. With Proteas’ all-rounder JP Duminy leading the charge, the southpaw has pinned hopes on their all-rounders to turn things around. “It is nice to have so many options with the bat and ball. I think that’s what we lacked a little bit, last year. We did not have a lot of options with the bat and ball. That’s something I am really looking forward to. In the three warm-up games we play here, we are going to understand what combinations will work for us,” said Duminy, was quoted in the press during an intra-team practice match at the Palam ground here on Friday.
The skipper also said that the Daredevils must learn from their mistakes. “Last season we were very bad in a lot of areas. This season we will rectify that…I think that is the disadvantage for us (in comparison) to most teams that they are pretty settled in how to go about the game. It is important for us to learn that very quickly and make sure we are on top of our game.”
He added on the veterans Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh stating that, “Those two players offer a lot of experience. In my opinion, they are good enough to field anywhere. It is great to have them; most of the players will feed of their experience. It is just understanding the dynamics of the game – the way you are best suited to positions.”
In 2012, DD finished top of the table but their title bid fizzled out in the knockout stage. Come 2015, with the powerhouse Yuvraj Singh in their ranks; Delhi Daredevils will hope to give their fans something to cheer about (atleast a trophy)
