This momentous achievement was realized through a marvellous nine-wicket victory over Rwanda during the African qualifiers. Uganda ensured a top-two finish securing their spot in the upcoming 20-team competition to be held in the West Indies and the USA. In the last four years since international status, no other African associate nation has played or won more T20I matches than Uganda.

The team previously participated in three ICC global events, notably in the 2004 and 2006 Under-19 World Cups, as well as the recent one in 2022 in the West Indies. Qualification for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is only the second time Uganda has qualified for a senior’s world championship in any sport.

All about Uganda cricket team and its history

Uganda’s cricketing journey dates back to the early 20th century when the game was introduced by British Colonialists. Initially cricket struggled to gain popularity due to football dominance. However, a group of dedicated individuals, fueled by their love for the sport embarked on a mission to promote cricket in the country.

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) was formed in 1941 and since then has played a pivotal role in the development of cricket in Uganda. The association, despite limited resources, organized tournaments, established cricket clubs and nurtured talented youngsters, recognizing the importance of a strong grassroots foundation for success.

Uganda's breakthrough on the international stage came in the 1970s when they participated in their first ICC Trophy, the qualification tournament for the cricket World Cup. Despite not being able to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament at that time, the valuable experience gained was invaluable. The event prompted the Ugandan cricket community to intensify their efforts and set higher goals.

In 2001, Uganda achieved a significant milestone by appearing in the ICC Trophy final. They narrowly missed out on the qualification but their performance was not overlooked. The international cricket community acknowledged Uganda’s potential and resilience.

The turning point in Uganda’s journey to the T20 World Cup came in 2011, when they secured a spot in the global qualifying tournament. The cricket event provided a chance for the team to showcase their skills and prove their mettle on the international stage. The team demonstrated exceptional skills with both bat and ball, surprising many established cricketing nations. Although they couldn’t secure a berth in the T20 World Cup that year, their performance showcased their potential and determination.

In 2019, Uganda achieved a remarkable T20 cricket World Cup qualification in Australia, surpassing expectations and securing their spot among the cricketing giants. Since then, Uganda has continued to make strides in international cricket. The UCA has partnered with international cricketing organizations to offer players exposure and opportunities. Ugandan players have honed their skills through training camps, international tours and friendly matches with top teams.
