The India vs South Africa series, which culminated with three highly-competitive Tests, will now shift to the ODI series, which begins on January 19. The 50 over series will also consist of three games, with the first and second ODI to take place in Paarl and the final ODI in Cape Town.

The new-look Indian team would be led by stand-in skipper KL Rahul as captain and Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain, with Rohit Sharma still not having recovered from injury. India would be keen to try and defeat the Proteas at home and avenge the Test series defeat..Two new players in Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad are added to the squad, both of whom are likely to make their ODI debuts.

ODI Captain Temba Bavuma will be hoping to win again in the ODI series as the hosts welcome their limited-overs regulars David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dwaine Pretorius, and Janneman Malan. Apart from the washed-out ODI against the Netherlands in November 2021, Wayne Parnell will be playing in his first full series since 2018 when he joined Worcestershire to play county cricket in the Kolpak deal.

Does the new look India have enough firepower to win the first match of the series? Will home conditions prove vital as the Proteas declare dominance?

Team News

After a memorable victory in the five-day format, South Africa will be in good spirits. Quinton de Kock, who retired from Test cricket after the series opener against India, will now play white-ball cricket exclusively. Marco Jansen, who shined in his maiden Test series, is expected to make his ODI debut too, and should trouble the Indian batters with his extra bounce and variations.

KL Rahul batted in the middle-order against England and it remains to be seen if a similar approach is taken to accommodate veteran Shikhar Dhawan who is making his return and Ruturaj Gaikwad who had an exceptional domestic season. Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin are also making a comeback after a long absence. Fans should expect wholesale changes throughout the playing XI.

Probable Playing XI

South Africa (SA): Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock (wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi

India (IND):  Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Shreyas Iyer/ Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal

Must-Picks

South African pacer Marco Jansen has been in tremendous form and has troubled the Indian batsman throughout the Test series. Quinton de Kock is Protea's leading run-scorer against the Indians and much of the same will be expected.

Virat Kohli though struggling for runs, showed up with the bat when needed in the final Test. Unburdened with the captain's responsibilities, it might be time for him to let loose. Veteran Shikhar Dhawan has been exceptional in the domestic circuit and will be hungry for runs.

Prediction

With South Africa changing the narrative and clearly making their home advantage count, the Proteas clearly have the upper hand in the upcoming test. With numerous series failures in South Africa, India will be going against the record books for this one. And if there is one time to be sure that Team India fires, that is when they are under pressure.

Cricwizz predicts India to win the 1st ODI and lead the series, 1-0.
