An eventful first day of the 2022 IPL mega auction as we saw a number of surprises, blunders, and moments where young stars struck big. The completion of Day 1 translates to not even the first 100 players on the list and for that reason, Day 2 promises to be even more exciting.

The unfortunate event of the renowned IPL auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsing did send a shockwave all around the world, however, it was soothing to hear that the gentleman was stable and feeling better.

Let us start our series of articles with the top five most expensive buys on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

1) Ishan Kishan (15.25 cr)

There were no doubts that this aggressive youngster would fetch big at the auctions. The 23-year old with his added ability to take the responsibility behind the stumps and his fearless approach to the situation helped him fetch a huge deal and Mumbai Indians showed great loyalty towards him and went on an all-out attack to bag him for a whopping sum of 15.25 crores.

We doubt any player can reach that mark in the ongoing auction and looks likely that the young dynamite will finish as the headliner.

2) Deepak Chahar (14 cr)

The talented pacer who can do way better with the bat than the other bowlers was always going to be a great asset to have. Chennai Super Kings made their intentions clear to go for the Right-hander no matter what and after an intense battle between Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings, he was finally destined to come back home at a handsome price of 14 crores, making him the most expensive purchase by CSK in the history of IPL auction.

3) Shreyas Iyer (12.25 cr)

There were rumors spreading that the former Delhi Capitals' skipper Shreyas Iyer could fetch as much as 20 crores. Although the Mumbai batsman did not breach that mark, he was well sought after by six teams on the tables and once the war heated up, it was up to the Kolkata side and the new joinee Gujarat, KKR were not going to surrender and we feel they have found a skipper for this side in the form of the 27-year.

At a staggering price of 12.25 crores, he stands to be the third most expensive player so far in the auctions.

4) Nicholas Pooran, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shardul Thakur, and Harshal Patel (10.75 cr)

The West Indies deputy skipper was a huge surprise, to be honest for many as his declining form in recent times made one believe that he wouldn't be a hot selling property at the auctions. However, the IPL dynamics as complicated as it is, the WK-batsman was bought by the 2016 champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad.

World's no. 1 T20I bowler and a talented all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga set the auction ablaze as he was the first player to cause a bidding war at the auctions. The youngster was finally won by his former team Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The former CSK pacer Shardul Thakur sealed a deal of 10.75 cr with the Delhi Capitals. However, it was surprising to see that the CSK side did not have much interest in him, raising their hands just twice in the heated bid. Nevertheless, the all-rounder would be feeling excited to don New Jersey.

Last edition's purple cap winner and only Indian to ever breach the 30 wicket mark in a single edition, Harshal Patel,  RCB made their intentions clear from the word go and after a neck-to-neck battle with Sunrisers, RCB managed to come out on top.

5) Prasidh Krishna, Lockie Ferguson, and Avesh Khan (10 cr)

The lanky fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who is making a name for himself in the current ongoing series against West Indies ensured he got an attractive deal of 10 crores with the Rajasthan Royals.

Avesh Khan, stood to be an interest among most of the teams that took part and the day could not get better for the youngster as he set a record deal with the Lucknow Supergiants to become the most expensive uncapped player in the history of the tournament.

Lockie Ferguson, who has made it a habit to strike big at the auction once again attracted a great crowd. After an intense bidding clash between four teams, the kiwi was finally bagged by the new joinee Gujarat titans, making him the most expensive purchase by the titans at this auction.
